Windows Media Player recognizes the songs, and pretends to play them, but there is no audio through the headphones. (Tried 2 pairs and both work in other devices.)
Any ideas?

Do you hear audio through the little speaker on the back of the 2215 when the headphones ~aren't~ plugged in?

I don't mean to be insulting, but is the volume turned down or muted?

The volume is up, not muted; and nothing out the back speaker

Media Player 9 for Windows Mobile 2003 has a volume and mute control that's separate from the system volume. (There's a mute button next to the volume control in Media Player.) Are you sure neither the Media Player nor system volume are muted?
Next question is, if you play the files play on your PC, is there sound from there?

Got it! Thanks! The system volume was "silent", the media player volume was cranked. Didn't know about the dual control. Appreciate it!
