Decided to replace Memory-Map with a NavMan 4400 BT + SmartST Pro.
After numerous calls to tech support (Cheers Ricky) I finally got it INSTALLED.
The whole process of getting it on the Paq was a proverbial pain in the ar*e, not helped by there being an update that needed run straight away otherwise "you'll find it'll crash when you go around a roundabout, as they didn't have any to test it on in New Zealand" [xx(]
It came very close to going on ebay, let me tell you. (Having said that, it's very close again - read on)
Still, persevered, and finally got it on...
Worked straight away, with little effort, very well - Holy sh1t! BT works! Map works! How fantastic is this?!? Wireless nirvana. I now understand truly what the attraction of BT is - and an application that it seems to have been made for.
Flush with my success, I even got my BT headset to link to the Paq and thus received whispers of "Turn Right 500yards" whenever an instruction was given... absolutely brilliant. One shame though, is that it (the Headset) cannot link to the Paq AND the phone at the same time - it's an 'either or' situation unfortunatley.
All happy in the garden of Bluetooth, right?
*Ahem*
I went away on business, and without the charger for the Paq. I thought I had switched it off when I left the car for the evening, but obviously not - anyone else notice that sometimes the screen dims when you push the power switch but it doesn't actually turn off?
I can recreate when BT and Wireless are running, but not consistently...
Anyway, next morning one dead iPaq; no worries - charge when I get home, I thought.
I get home, put it on charge, switch it on and am faced with the HP start-up logo that I last saw when I first ever started it - it had 'hard reset' [:(] Or had it just 'run-flat'??
OK - a pain, but not the end of the world - everything is on the desktops, 1 & 2, so rebuild just a time consuming affair.
Until I got to the NavMan SmartST Pro. I have tried and tried and tried again to get it to install and REGISTER with no joy.
I've hard reset the Paq again and done a completely clean install, removed it from both desktop and Paq and then reg cleaned thoroughly before installing, to no avail.
It'll install fine, followed by the 'update', but registering it, which is an absolute requirement before it will even run, just will not happen. I also end up with more than one 'Program Icon' in the programs folder, strangely..
And of course it has to be at the weekend when NavMan Tech are not at work. And of course I am away first thing Monday for extended travel for which I really could use GPS... *sigh*
So, I thought, I'll see what my 'old' solution of Memory-Map had been up to during my treacherous sojourn into NavMan territory.
Well well well - what have we here? An updated version compatible with the BT4400 unit! Wahey - off we go - download, install, adjust settings - and tah dah! Works perfectly! So my initial problem is solved - albeit with out voice guide and limited to Map 'Viewing' rather than 'guiding'
It'll do.
In Summary?
If the software install works for you, great - if it doesn't you have my heartfelt commiserations, because my whole experience, notwithstanding 'Rickys' assistence (Where he didn't really tell me anything I wasn't already considering, with respect)with regard to NavMans' software installation has been absolutely appalling.
The software when running is excellent, the hardware very good as well - oh, apart from there not being a dual power cable included in the box due to their being a 'production' problem - necessitating sending in a card and awaiting one being sent - and when it works, it does work great.
The iPaq has some 'inconsistencies' that I need to explore further - unless anyone can advise?
Why does it not turn off off when the power button is pressed? Is this a me thing or do others have the same occurence?
When it does go 'flat' - does this always result in a hard rest type situation? Or again, is this unusual? (My old Casio125 would go flat and could remain uncharged for days without hard restting!?)
Hopefully I've managed a balanced view when I certainly don't feel very balanced about it!
