I spent a good hour on Microsoft's technical support line this morning, and I thought I would post this to hopefully save someone else from having the same experience
I have been using Microsoft Reader on and off, mostly for lit files I created myself. I wanted to buy a book from Amazon (Year Zero, by Jeff Long) and of course I was going to have to activate my reader.
I went to the Microsoft Activation site, and successfully activated my reader on my pc, but I was unable to activate the one on my pocket pc (HP 1940 iPAQ). I kept getting an error saying that my operating system was out of date, and activation would only work on pocket pc 2002 or later. Of course the 1940 is brand new, and has pocket pc 2003, so this should not have happened.
Anyway, long story short, after an hour on the phone with a helpful but unable to help me Indian tech support guy, I finally discovered the problem myself. When I had installed Reader, I had installed it on my SD card, not in main memory. When I uninstalled it from the SD card, and reinstalled into main memory, it activated like a charm.
So the moral is, if you have trouble activating, make sure you have installed Reader where Microsoft expects it to be.
Bad design, if you ask me.
