I know some of you have had bad experiences with Sandisk, but at least this illustrates that the prices of SD cards are dropping fairly quickly -- and it's only a matter of time before others follow.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/parekh-20030918-Sandisk-512MBSD.jpg" />

I hear 'ya. But 512MB can totally work in the meantime. Plus those 1GB SD cards are going to cost at least $300 to start.

I wonder if these price reductions signal a release of the 1 gb and 2 gb cards (per msmobile.com site) soon.

I've had way less problems with SanDisk than I have with Lexar.

I think the 512 MB SD is still a little high priced. I've seen the 256 MB SD for $50 - $60. Two of those are a lot less than the 512. Yeah, I know, there are benefits to one large chip. But for now, I can live with a couple of 256's.

Based on MobilePlanet's ad's (before they pulled them out) the 1 gb sd card will be $350.

...but from a price perspective, wherever SanDisk goes, Lexar won't be TOO far behind!!

OHHH 152.99$ !!!
So cheap compared to Europe ...
Is there somebody who can buy one and ship it to me in France ?
Or exchange it to 2 memory stick pro from Lexar 256Mb each because I've just bought 2 them last week but my NX73v has been stolen....
Thanks

PS : sorry for my english

I agree with mrporc that france is way behind the moon for prices.

Janak,

FYI, szamot had started a thread on this topic a couple days before you posted to front page. You may want to combine the two threads as his also has some interesting discussion.

Sorry I don't know how to attach a link to the thread  .

huum... little bit cheaper than in france but still expensive compare to the states (e.cost.com, ...) :(

About 50 bucks more, hehe. Plus it was not like $450 when it first came out.

I have had a 128MB Sandisk SD in my Ipaq 3970 for quite some time now and so far I am happy with it. 512MB would allow me to

How is the speed of these SD cards? Any web page that compares the speed of SD cards you can recommend?

Thanks

A bit fast to submit there...

I wanted to say that 512MB would be nice to have. My Ipaq would work more or less as a portable drive then from work and home.

My Sandisk Ultra 1GB CF card is awesome though. Highly recommended!

Not to get off topic but ECost also has this 1gb CompactFlash card for $159 (after rebate) http://www.ecost.com/ecost/shop/detail.asp?DPNo=138924. This looks like a really great price. Have any of you guys dealt with this brand before? Any comments, concerns, complaints?

...and chances are you WILL NOT have problems with SanDisk, BUT the majority of complaints I do hear on this board (and other boards) regarding flash card reliability tend to focus on SanDisk.

Many supporters like to speculate that this is due to SanDisk's huge marketshare ("you hear more complaints b/c more people use them"). But I recall someone on this board had polled other boardmembers on the brand they use. While SanDisk did field the largest votes (somewhere around 60%), it didn't quite line up with percentage of complaints that I see for SanDisk vs other major brands (which I'm guessing is much closer to around 90-95%). Lexar users rang up around 25-30%, but to be honest, I've probably seen one complaint regarding Lexar over the last 2 years (since I started using flash cards).

Additionally, I can say that SanDisk cards have been (in my experience) slow compared to the competition. One site (I think it was http://www.dpreview.com) had done some exhaustive performance comparison's between different brand of CF cards. SanDisk was near the bottom of the stack (dozens of brands were compared). Even SanDisk's Ultra line of CF cards (which is their high-performance line) proved to be slower than some competing brands of standard CF cards.

There's also a known issue with SanDisk and Toshiba PPCs. For whatever reason, Toshiba PPCs reportedly work with all major brands of SD cards except SanDisk. No one knows exactly why.

Finally, I've heard numerous reports of customer service being rather non-responsive for SanDisk (which is not the case with their biggest competitor, Lexar).

YMMV... I personally stay away from them, but that's not to say they don't create perfectly functional cards in most cases... b/c they probably do.

I've heard the sandisk complaints but my experience has been just the opposite. I've got 2 sandisk sd cards, 1 1G cf card and no problems with any of them.

My 128MB sandisk has worked flawlessly with my Toshiba laptop for around 6 months now. Maybe I'm just lucky.

The known issue is with Toshiba PPCs, not their laptops... of course who's to say for sure that this incompatibility is not somehow Toshiba's fault. They don't exactly have a stellar record with PPCs (though their reputation does shine with laptops).

In any case, it's a good sign that SanDisk is dropping their prices as their competitors will surely follow to stay competitive. :way to go:

Well, in my experience SanDisk CompactFlash performs way better than the competition, IF you buy the newer Ultra cards (not the old Ultra). If you look at this link http://www.robgalbraith.com/bins/multi_page.asp?cid=6007 you will see that the newer Ultra cards are the fastest cards around today. With a performance of 9 MB/sec from reader to computer they are hard to beat. The 1 GB Ultra ("new") is just awesome in my eyes.

As for the SD cards I do not know the speed of any cards (does anybody know similar tests for SD cards?), but I can say that the Sandisk 128 MB SD card has worked flawlessly in my Ipaq 3970 for over a year now. The speed seems good enough for most use.

Best regards

Well the 256Mb Sandisk I have has been corrupted 3-4 times now when used with my Axim. This is my second one of course as I already sent one back because of this same problem. Every now and again my Sandisk will become unreadable in the Amix and asks me to format the unrecognized card. I never take the card out of the Axim and I have lost data till I learned not to rely on the Sandisk card. About to send this card back for a third replacement.... sigh........... :|

Wow....I guess I really have been lucky. My 256MB sandisk card NEVER leaves my Axim (until yesterday when I replaced it with my new 512mb sandisk). It has all my MP3's/WMA's on it and I use it a few times a day. No Problems at all! My 128mb is always in my Toshiba and I use it when I carry files to my desktop to print. Again, no problems.

Now....if I could only figure out how to print from the laptop via 802.11g or even BT. Well then life would really be grand!

Yes! More memory, now, can you just get a case that holds memory cards? That would so cool, I dont want another case for my ipaq though - I wanted a seperate one, is that possible. I am doing a google search, but nothing, yet....

I've seen them online. RoadWired has them here (http://www.roadwired.com/store/Product.cfm?categoryid=2&Productid=55) and here (http://www.roadwired.com/store/Product.cfm?categoryid=2&Productid=76). I also have a couple LowePro cases I got from Saneal Cameras.

ecost has had those kinds of deals going for at least the week i have been going to the site. I just dont have the funds for that right now. More importantly need a keyboard for my toshiba, then maybe bt card, then an sd card, then, then, then, then,

I like that one, but the size seems to be the problem. I would like to see a little zippered case that exhibits a card holding system for only cards, no floppies as seen in the first link. Maybe 5-10 max - smaller the better :D

Thanks for those links though!

In that case, there's this one (http://207.188.74.151/pages/series/dres/dres4.html) (two CF + one PC Card, I'm sure can hold several SD's with some movemant), this one (http://207.188.74.151/pages/series/dres/dresDMCV.htm) (up to eight cards) and this one (http://207.188.74.151/pages/series/dres/dresDMCH.htm) (up to eight cards as well). I'd look for these in camera stores.

Edit: these are all LowePro products.

Edit #2: The latter two both appear to be available from Vistek (http://www.vistek.ca/details/srchresults.asp?txtsearch=LowePro+DMC-H) (1231 10th Ave. SW.).
