Why did Dell change the Switcher Bar in Windows Media for Pocket PC 2003? It was great in the original version, in my opinion. Now only the "switch apps" button appears, and you have to click on it to check the battery life or brightness setting.

Does anyone know what the "Maximum Performance" setting is for the CPU? Is this 500 Mhz?

What other changes have you noticed? What do you like or dislike about Dell-specific changes to WM2003?

I dislike this...
1. The startup sound dosent seem to play when you soft reset it.
2. I cant get the activesync connect sound to play on my freshly upgraded axim even though I have set it to in the sound control panel it.
3. The new calculator is ugly and worse than 2002

I agree! I played with a friend's new X5 and found these annoying, too.
The sounds can be added by going to START - SETTINGS - NOTIFICATIONS, by the way.

The only reason I can think of to change the calculator is that it might be easier to use in direct sunlight.

I did that and it plays when you push the preview button, but not anytime else. I even checked the pocket pc registry, but all seems fine there.

as for the calculator, thats just dell being idiotic, because in the HP 2003 upgrade, the calc dosent suck.

About the Max Performance.....from what I have read in other Dell Axim forums, this keeps the processor at 400mhz, but bumps the Bus speed up to 199mhz instead of the normal 99mhz. I dont know for sure but that is what I read....I only have an Axim Basic, so I dont have this setting. And yes I have WM2003.

Where's the max preformance thing?

If you go into the battery and brightness settings you'll see a tab called "Control" (I think). You can set the CPU speed to Power Save (200 Mhz), Normal (400), Auto (200 or 400, as needed), or Maximum Performance (described above).

I leave mine at Normal (400 Mhz), but switch to Auto every now and then.

Not me. That sound was horrible!

All I see are the 3 options.

All I see are the 3 options.

That means you're running the 2002 OS (like me).

In my about screen it say:

Version 4.20.1081 (build 13100)

Isn't that 2003?

I also ment to mention that the Rom Version say A05. So isn't this 2003?

Hmm...interesting!

Mine is Pocket PC 2002, and says:
-ROM version A03
-Intel XScale PXA250 (some PXA255s run 2002, though)
-version 3.0.11171(build 11178)

Sounds like yours is WM2003. If you've upgraded the OS or bought it since June 23rd, this is most likely true.

Another way to tell - run the Calculator program. If the number keys are solid light blue and the background is dark blue, it's 2002. If there's a white background, it's 2003.

I did update the OS. The calculator is the ugly white one. I also hate the fact that the switcher bar program no longer has the brightness and battery shortcuts on it.

Perhaps this option isn't avaliable on Axims that were upgraded?

Certainly there is some benefit to upgrading, eh?

I have an Axim X5 2003 and my switcher bar has the brightness and battery settings on it. Wonder why yours doesn't.

My apologies. I know what you mean know in regards to a missing battery icon. I almost forgot on the old switcher bar the battery meter was always displayed and you didn’t need to click into the drop down to get to battery settings.

That is an odd thing to pull from a new version.

In my case I have used Battery Pack for so long I never really used the switcher bar battery meter.

The Maximum performance option is only available if you are running Windows Mobile 2003 AND the Axim X5 Advanced has a PXA255 Processor.

If you have an older Axim X5 Advanced with a PXA250 processor then you don't get this option.

Yes, but how much does it improve performance? Any benchmarks - anyone?
