This is basically an e-mail authentication service to prevent spam. If you send one of their customers an e-mail it replies asking you to authenticate yourself by typing the word that is in a graphic. I have been trying to contact someone using this service and spamarrest seems to be completely down, so I can't authenticate the message so it gets through. Very frustrating.

I seriously dislike any "whitelist" email service where your email doesn't get delivered unless you prove that you're a human being. I never know when someone I need to communicate with, but who I have not already added to my whitelist, will send me email but will get confused by such a invitation bounceback.
Instead, I run SpamAssassin (www.spamassassin.org) on my mail server. :)

SpamAssassin is a server-side spam filter for *nix. Works quite well! I just installed it here on my home server along with MailScanner and now it gets rid of my junk mail and checks for Viruses!

I agree, in this case, I am trying to contact customer service at a vendor and they are using this. The service is still down, so I can't authenticate my message so he gets it. I think a whitelist is an especially bad in a customer service scenario.

The email service I use (www.fastmail.fm) uses SPamassasin. It's quite good at identifying spam.
They provide a system of customizing the email you get and don't get - so you can script it out.
I can honestly say that the amount of spam that I see has been reduced by at least 80%.

Yeah, yeah, yeah. (I'm supposed to have implemented it already on the PPCT server about 3 months ago.)
