I was amazed when I was about to listen to some music on my PPC last night (HP 2210), that my playlists (of which I had about 8 on the machine) were all missing! The music files were all still there, but not one of the playlists were there! I did a search on the machine to find them, to see if the playlist files were still somehow on the machine, but WMP wasn't recognizing them for some reason. I didn't find one!

They were in the "My Documents" folder of the CF card. They are not there now, nor anywhere else.

What could have happened to them? I certainly did not intentionally delete them. Why could they be missing? Could Activesync have deleted them somehow? Why? That didn't happen on previous syncings.

It occurred to me that I had recently backed up the PPC, using ActiveSync's Backup utility. I thought I'd see if I could find those playlist files on the Backup file on my computer's hard drive, and restore them to my PPC. Then I found out the grave limitations of that backup/restore program. With all desktop backup/restore programs that I'm familiar with, you can search for a particular file or files in the backup volume, and restore only that file or files.

But it looked like the only way to restore in this program is to restore everything, the whole backup volume, and completely overwrite and delete the current data on the PPC. I wouldn't want to do that. Or, is there another way to find a particular file in the Backup volume? Did I miss something?

Any other suggestions on how to retrieve my WMP9PPC playlists? Any ideas on why they might suddenly be missing?

In case they are irretrievably lost, and I have to re-make them, is it possible to make them on the desktop or notebook computer, and transfer the playlists to the PPC via ActiveSync? I believe I once tried this, and had problems. They are a different filetype extension, no? Should they be automatically converted on copying to the PPC via ActiveSync, so that they will work on the PPC?

Any suggestions?

No idea how to recover your playlists. :(

What sort of audio files are you playing? If it's not wma, you should take a look at WinamPAQ.

I was aware that you could have playlists on the ppc!
