<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.sandisk.com/pressrelease/20030828a.htm' target='_blank'>http://www.sandisk.com/pressrelease/20030828a.htm</a><br /><br /></div><img src="http://www.sandisk.com/img/press/extreme_512sd_th.jpg" /><img src="http://www.sandisk.com/img/press/extreme_1gb_th.jpg" /><br /><br />"SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ: SNDK) today introduced the SanDisk Extreme(tm) CompactFlash® and SD line of high performance, high durability digital film cards designed for professional photographers who demand the highest levels of reliability and performance under extreme conditions. The SanDisk Extreme cards deliver a minimum write speed of 9 megabytes per second (MB/sec.) and a minimum read speed of 10MB/sec. throughout their extended operating temperature range, making these the fastest flash memory cards in the world*. These exceptionally fast write and read speeds are critical when shooting large numbers of high resolution images and transferring the images to a computer. SanDisk Extreme cards are exclusive to photo retailers in the North American market."<br /><br />Although it's not meant for Pocket PC use, it's always nice to see improvements in the world of SD and CF. And, if you can believe it, these high performance actually result in faster read/write speeds on the Pocket PC. I was always convinced that the Pocket PC was the bottleneck in the equation, but after running Spb Benchmark on a high-speed Sandisk CF card that I have, it actually made a difference! I really need to publish those results some time. :D

... the highest levels of reliability and performance under extreme conditions. ...
Reliability, huh? You'll have to forgive me for being a bit skeptical here. Since they're faster now, does that mean they'll die in three months instead of five under the "extreme conditions" inside the SD slot of my iPAQ?

I'll bet it's that sleek, black case that makes it go faster. ;-)

I'll wait and see if anyone else has success with one inside a Dell first. I only use my current one for MP3 files and reformat it everytime I change music. Can't use it for applications of working files.

They should have a "Type-R" sticker on it to make it go even faster!

Now these cards probably run as fast as the standard Lexar cards!

Has anyone published any performance numbers comparing cuurently available SD cards?

Hey, at least it's not named X-Treme.

Though the X is emphasized. So it's halfway evil.

I agree with the Type R sticker though :P

I actually think that if they were to add racing stripes we could achieve performance in the ludicrous range! :multi: :takethat:

I've had way too many bad experiences with Sandisk and their crappy, slow cards.

Never again.

It can only go to -13F. I want somthing that can take some real cold like -30F so I can use this baby outside in the winter.

Then you need to ebay that toshiba and get something else. It is only good to freezing - 32F.

Jason, what I'd really like to see is a set of benchmark results comparing the various brands, models and sizes of cards. It sounds like a big undertaking but Spb Benchmark should make it feasible. All the Pocket PC and photo sites likely would link to the results.

Even if a pocket pc could run at -30F I wouldn't do it. It would be a pain trying to control the stylus with gloves on.

Not really, since Lexar uses sandisk memory chip inside their brand.

Says who? Lexar cards are CONSISTENTLY faster than Sandisk crap.

Sorry. Bad use of the "-" .

It is only good to freezing, or 32F.

Lexar used SanDisk controllers in some cards, but not all. Always buy the Lexar cards that were made in Japan. If you buy the cards from China or Taiwan, they may use the SanDisk controllers. You can also tell by the serial numbers, but I'm not sure about these numbers myself.

Also, did anyone notice the price of these cards? They are double priced for the same capacity as other top-end cards. I'll stick with Lexar and Transcend.

If you have Lexar cards, why don't you carefully crack it open (with a small flat scalpel), you will see two chips inside, checkout the writing on the memory chip (the larger chip). Both my 128 and 256 Lexars use Sandisk memory chips.

I'll see what I can do - if you look back to June 23rd (ish) when the Pocket PC 2003 launch was, I published a comparison of various memory cards on the 2215 I think. I'll try to expand that, but the problem is getting the memory cards of course. :-)

I've had my e740 on a belt clip when I was outside in -20F so it can be done, for a short time anyway.

Forget CF, Spbmark that SD card! And compare to all the other "5x-speed" hi-capacity SD cards from Japan...

I also want to know if PPCs' SD(IO) slots are the bottleneck...

Yes, having benchmarks would be great. I have to say that my Sandisk 256Mb SD card has been nothing but trouble recently......

I know that people say they have problems with their cards, but I've had the same three sandisk cards (2 CF and 1 SD) for years and have never had a single issue. I looked for the hp2210 benchmark, but I couldn't find it. I'd be happy to add my cards to a benchmark if someone is getting one together.

I finally received my card reader and discovered that Windows Explorer (not the shell Explorer) hangs when I stick my 256MB Sandisk card in. But all my CF cards work fine with it. I wonder if the higher-speed SD cards will alleviate this.

Edit: Formatting the card on another machine alleviated the issue. :D
