A number of recent threads have incited a lot of discussion about whether software package A was worth this amount of money or not. It's an interesting subject so:

What do you feel a good application is worth? How much would you really pay for:

Major application (a la Pocket Informant or TextMaker)
Utility (a la PocketPlus or PocketBackup)
Entertainment program (a la PocketMusic or PocketMVP)
Game (any)

What's the MOST you would pay for each of the genres above?

What do you expect in support and upgrades for the above?

And lastly, how much do you feel is a fair price for an OS upgrade for a PPC?

I'm really interested to hear what everyone has to say about this so let me hear from you!

I'm kind of with dean_shan... $20 is a nice number overall. But I've owned a ton of handhelds (mostly Palm until now..love that 2215 :D ) and bought a lot of software....

For a good, complex app like WordSmith, Agendus (PalmOS) or PocketInformant (PPC) with a desktop component, I'm willing to pay up around $30-35-40

Utilities $5-10

I'm sorry, but for things like screensavers and themes $0

A good game $10-20

just my 2

I think that there is too few freeware on PPC, but I know and understand that people wants to get paid for their work.
But ... and there is always a but, I also think that piracy will increase as applications and games cost more, I have a few of them myself but I would much rather buy a program if it was cheap enough.

So for applications, depends on the size of it ofcourse and the complexity but from 5$ to 15$
And games should not cost more than 15$.... I tought that games that cost 30$ or more is just ... too expencive... I would rather buy a game for my PC then to the same or cheaper price.

And as one here wrote, themes should be freeware....

That is the thing I miss about palm. I could go to freewarepalm.com and there would be new stuff every day. I admit most of it junk ( flashlight programs and clocks, etc) but it was still free.

I would have to say for a typical app / game, I would not pay more than $20. But every now and then comes an app over $20 that I can't live without like Pocket Controller and Sprite Backup Pro. My most recent purchase was Ladware Pocket Quicken (wife wanted that one) and that was $40. But you know what? Some of the best apps and plugins are less than $10, go figure.

The most expensive programs I have are Textmaker and Repligo. These are both serious apps and of the two I thing Repligo is a really good value.

I also have a few in the $20.00 -$25.00 range like BackupPlus, Pocket Informant and Mobipocket Reader. All these I bought because they forfilled a need for me.

For music and video I use the free PocketMVP.

Games, well I've only ever liked one enough to buy, Pocket Slay. Forget how much.

I also have a few freeware utilities scattered around, notably Remover which comes in very handy.

Like a lot of people who made the transition from to PPC I soon noticed that there are not as many freeware goodies to be found. To be honest, I would just as soon buy a professionally made app if it's priced sensibly. You just have to look at the current PocketMVP mess to see some of the problems that can arise.

My most expensive is Running Voice GSM. Everything else I bought is less than $20.
