Mine is scheduled to be delivered tomorrow. I'm curious, is it the same rom version as was made available through irc and other channels? Anything else worthwhile (new software versions etc) on the cd?

I haven't yet, but was told by HP via phone that I would receive it tomorrow also...
There probably isn't anything different, other than some bug fixing, between the version that leaked and this one that we are being sent. I wouldn't run the other version, though. I'd wait for the legitimate ROM to arrive and install it...

FEDEX tracking says that I will receive mine today. Hope that they are correct. It is sitting in their sorting facility in Nashville right now (or hopefully is being loaded onto a truck for today's dispatch).

Everyone that has a tracking number is lucky... I hope you guys actually receive it..
I am usually a patient person, but....
Order WM2003 7/14. Should ship by 8/4 receive 8/5.
Bank account charged 8/1, thought everything is OK for 8/4 ship date.
Bank charge deleted 8/2, receive e-mail on 8/4 stating that it would ship not later than 8/19. Would receive e-mail when shipped. Called 8/14 to check on ship date. HP CS said that they would receive it on 8/19 and should ship on 8/20. Bank account charged again on 8/15. It looks good this time. Charge deleted on 8/18.
Today is 8/20, check e-mail, no ship confirmation. Check order on web site, not updated still shows 8/4. Call HP, ask for order status "Your order is still on back order, It should be arrive in late August", WHAT THE H%LL IS LATE AUGUST. WOULDN'T THIS BE LATE AUGUST. Or does HP consider late August to be August 31, 2003 11:59:59.
Sometimes I think it would have just been more efficient for HP to state "HP will be providing upgrades for X models. At this time we are working on upgrade solutions for the stated models. No time frame has been set to release updgrades. Please register you e-mail address to be notified when the upgrades will be orderable."
When did everyone order their copy?

Mine is enroute on a truck to my house right now! I can't wait to see how the new OS complies with the older unit. I hope that the speed changes are at least somewhat comparable with it still having the older intel chip.

Mine was ordered 7/6, was supposed to receive it 7/7, then 7/8, then some date in 2098... Depending on when I check, the date goes back and forth in time. Called HP, was told it's backordered but they hoped mid-August. I was supposed to have received an email about the backorder. Nada.
The lady was nice, just doing her job. I politely gave her some feedback: Please keep the customer informed.
The dates have been changing less in August, they keep advancing. Currently, it's 8/28. Will give them a call in the next day or two to followup. So far, no charges on my credit card.
We shall see. I agree w/ eustts, why can't they just tell us? I've worked w/ order processing before, both for retail and business. One way to *REALLY* anger your customers is to change delivery dates on them but don't tell them.

Sorry in advance for the long post...
Okay, I couldn't wait, so I called about my order. First, let me say the lady on the phone was nice and professional. Can't fault her, she just knows what's on her display.
Guess what? According to HP, NO upgrades have shipped, ALL upgrades are on backorder. I pointed out to the lady what folks are saying here and elsewhere, they already have them or have tracking numbers. Here's how the conversation went from there:
HP: But Sir, EVERYBODY is on backorder, NOTHING has shipped, NOBODY has received these, we don't even have the upgrades to ship to ANYBODY!
Me: Okay... So when DO you show that it should ship?
HP: Late August, sometime in late August
Me: And when is that?
HP: Well, it actually says mid-to-late August, but mid-August is past, so it's late August. The latest update we have is from yesterday.
Me: Okay, that's the best you can do, I understand. My concern is that the date keeps slipping, but I have received no contact from HP. I have had to contact HP myself. HP keeps moving the dates without saying a word.
HP: Well, you should have received an email notifying you of the change.
Me: I have not. The lady I spoke with a couple of weeks ago said I should have received an email, now you say I should have received an email. I have not. That's what bothers me. I can understand some date slippage, you just need to tell me. I shouldn't have to keep contacting you.
HP: I'll tell you what I can do, I will contact the "Notification Group", who is in charge of contacting people. I will have them add you to the list.
Talk about the left hand not knowing what the right hand's doing...

Fedex arrived a day early. In my hand I have a CD labeled:
"Pocket PC 2003 Upgrade for the hp iPAQ(tm) Pocket PC h5400 Series"
Strange that it doesn't exist yet. :)
Now, I did order mine from ppcupgrade.com rather than from hp directly, so HP may be correct that THEY aren't shipping any yet. However, the cd's are shipping from ms (qmedia)

The CD, FWIW, does include Outlook 2002, as well as active sync 3.7, and many of the same software programs that came on the original cd.
Also, includes Pocket Backup 2. (I don't think that was on the original cd?)

Darn it... don't have my AC cable here handy, I've been using a usb sync & charge on it lately... can't do the upgrade tonight :(.
Well, hopefully it's the same rom revision I've already got, the I don't have to mess with it. We'll see tomorrow night I guess, when I can get at the AC adapter.

Now, If I check my order status, it still states the the order date is 7/14 and has a ship date of 8/4.

Well, I called this morning to keep my order open. I asked when it would ship, HP stated beginning of September. I guess I stuttered, ans HP said that is when they are due to the wharehouse, and would be shipped shortly.
In short, it will be shipped when whenever.........

I *FINALLY* got HP to contact me instead of having to contact them. This morning, i received more or less the same message as eustts, only w/ a 9/04 contact date. However, there's a couple of interesting lines that are different in the email I received:
"We expect to receive the software within the next week or two. The delay has been due to licensing issues at the manufacturer. I do apologize for our neglect in notifying you promptly. Every effort is being made to facilitate your needs expediently."
Yeah, I'm frustrated that there's further delay, but I at least got a notice this time *AND* an apology. What I'm curious about is that my delivery date went from 8/28 yesterday to 8/25 today.
And just what "licensing issue" are they fighting w/ the mfr. about? How to split up the profits from the shipping fees they're charging the "free" upgrade customers?

Oh, yeah, forgot one thing: I got the email while in a meeting, so I replied back instead of calling. Simply asked to keep the order open, I still want it as soon as possible. I did get a reply back from the person at HP within minutes.
Hey, at least I got *something* quick from HP on this...

Outlook 2002 on the CD? To my knowledge no PPC or past opsys upgrade has ever come with that because of compatibility issues. Usually Outlook 2000. Something fishy about gai-jin allegedly having received a copy.

I just spoke with a knowledgeable rep at HPs smb center and she (Diane) was her name said that no copies have shipped yet for the 5400 series and she seriously doubted that anyone was able to obtain a legal copy from anywhere else. She indicated end of August, Beginning of Sept would be the date they received it for shipping.

08-22-2003, 04:43 AM
Sorry to disappoint you tax, but it does indeed come w/ outlook 2002. (As I believe ALL wm2003 based PPC's do).
And again, I DID NOT order my copy from hp. Thus it may very well be true that MS/Qmedia is shipping the discs where HP is not yet.

Got the AC cable back today, hooked it up and attempted the rom upgrade. It says I have the same rom image version that's on the cd, so no need to re-flash it... Guess the "final" wm2003 I got through less official channels really was the real thing...

gai-jin - are you 100% positive that the rom from the actual retail cd is the exact same as the one you recieved from your 'less official' channels? I am connected to these...same channels...and they are saying that it is a pre-release with a few of the software components having problems still.
If you could check and find out... that would be great!
I need to order my cd too but I want to wait until everyone else is recieving theres. No sense in throwing $30 at something I won't see for two months... I can wait...

Hmm... I suppose I couldn't say for certain that it's bit for bit identical, but it is indeed an identical version number. 2.00.21 IIRC.
Gai-jin
Will someone who got the CD check Asset Viewer and post all the version numbers?
I still felt that the unofficial version wasn't 100%.
The Wifi only appearing in the drop down box when its enabled using the Wifi tool
The heavy RAM use, and failure to reclaim memory when closing apps
The strange password screen which seems to ignore the time you setup
I thought that bluetooth was supposed to be all PPC rather than a per manufacturer setup as the one on the 5450 is the same look as was in PPC2002
Oh well :) as I have said before the ClearType is the biggest thing I like about this and the blue stripes in the folder list views make it easier to follow the columns :)

1. Bluetooth implementation is 100% correct in terms of iPAQ- its identical to 2210 and the version is even newer... but I got instability issue with my GPRS (not with my desktop network BT connection... so I cannot say its BT bugged...)
2. WiFi- I think its like if you have plugged the card the first time... and it looks fine for me.
3. heavy RAM use is reported on my friends' iPAQ 2210, dont worry everyone on same boat.
4. I dont have a clue about what you said about password, I use fingerprint and it works fine and instead like the old version which always has strange issue like suddenly popup a 4 digit password instead of the fingerprint applet.
Admitted.. you know I am not that 'official', yet. But I will pay, I swear ^_^...
Its just getting too tempted when see my friends 2210.

Just got the shipment confirmation email  Even though it's to ship for next day delivery, now I have to wait until Monday instead of tomorrow. Would have been nice to have the weekend to have fun with upgrading, reloading, etc. Oh well, at least it's finally on its way...
This is the "purchased" version from HP, not the "free" version, btw

I also just got my shippment confirmation from HP. A quick call to them to confirm that I wasn't dreaming did confirm that I will be receiving the upgrade on Monday as well.
gai-jin, if you're working with any WM2003 ROM that is not the official version, I would take it off your device as quickly as possible.
HP monitors these forums, and if you're using a pirated version... I'm not saying that anything "bad" will happen, but if your device turns into a brick because you had the illegal ROM on it (like if you have problems taking it off...) HP doesn't necessarily HAVE to help you fix your device...
I would also like to extend a friendly caution to anyone looking to get their hands on illegally distributed or leaked ROM's: Don't. Just say no. Pocket PC's are expensive, and if you damage or hose your device due to installing, removing, or otherwise using a questionable ROM, you may end up with a permanent brick on your hands.
During the PPC2002 upgrade, Compaq was nice enough to release a utility that would remove an illegally installed ROM from your device, allowing you to effectively down-grade it.
HP hasn't done that for Windows Mobile 2003, and the ROM Upgrade Utility may not allow you to pull the "pre-release" version off.
Just a word of caution...
Kindest Regards,
Christopher Spera

Very true Chris,
I am actually still running the 2002 ROM 1.00.45 because when I got the 5455, it didnt' come with a cradle so I am unable to update the ROM (no ac power...). I am still looking for an alternate way to do this and if you have any ideas...
Normally I don't have a huge problem with piracy, but when it's only $30 for a new OS for a device that you spent well over $300 for, you can't complain! Just buy it!
The reason that I'm curious about the 'unofficial' one is that I don't know how long I will be able to wait for the new version. If HP is backed up on orders, it could be another few months before I would see the CD... I guess I will have to wait and see...

I do indeed have a rom on my device that I got through un-official channels a few weeks ago. As I explained in another thread, I don't feel bad about downloading it, and don't consider it piracy, since I had already paid for my copy of the upgrade. (Or rather, had paid for the shipping, and was entitled to a free upgrade)
The rom image version is the same, and I didn't have time last night to reload everything for the upgrade unless it was necessary. I may mess with it this weekend. I may also wait to see if anyone else here can verify that there is something different.
I definitely agree with the issues PR brought up. These are problems I've experienced. I actually only experienced these the 2nd time I loaded the upgrade, as the first unit had a bad pixel and got exchanged under the service plan. That's why I'm thinking maybe it's a bad install or such, and I'm considering re-running the upgrade.
If I still have the same issues after installing the official copy, then I certainly hope HP/MS has already been working on a patch to correct these issues.
Gai-jin
[edit] apparently I won't be playing with it this weekend... I left my AC cable at work again tonight.

I do think that most of us got from the 'quicker' channel got the official version, calculating the leap time required for the disc production and the time of availability of the ROM.
However, Chris is right- I faced the same issue on my 36xx before, fortunately I gain access to some low level way to fix it (using CF Jacket and ROM dumping command with serial connectivity) so I finally get out from the hassle.
So, if you have installed/thinking to install, be prepared- worst could happen. Thats the tradeoff to be on the real 'frontline'.
But... still disappointed with the Alarm issues.... when can MS finally come up with a PPC thats 100% fulfilled an alarm work?

So close, yet so far... I've been sick all weekend, had to stay home today. Ah, but here's the Fedex man w/ the upgrade for my 5455!
The shipping box says 54xx series iPAQ upgrade. The sticker on the shrink wrap around the CD and pamphlets says 54xx upgrade. Can't see the CD without breaking the MS warning stickers, there's an HP sticker w/ the product key obscuring the label on the CD itself. Imagine my surprise to open the CD sleeve and read that it's the upgrade for the 3900 series iPAQ! :really mad: After all the delays...
Have already called HP, was passed back and forth between Service & Sales. I was told that since it was a mis-shipment, they would send me out another and would be contacted about it later today. I did tell them to have the warehouse double check what they're sending me and others.
Oh well, will go back to bed and get to feeling better instead of blowing up at them.
And yes, I did pop the CD in to make sure it just wasn't the wrong label. This was shipped from the Omaha, NE warehouse.

My shipping confirmation message had a UPS tracking number, not FedEx. I received the e-mail on Saturday, 2003-08-23 at 2:00 AM. As of today, the UPS tracking page still says "Billing Information Received." My credit card has not been charged yet, either. My order was placed on 2003-07-07 and I have received two e-mails informing me of the shipping date slipping back some more.

I really enjoy HP customer service, I really do. (Which emoticon is the one for dripping sarcasm?) From my earlier post, was supposed to receive my 5455 upgrade today but instead received a 3900 series CD. Called HP, they were supposed to have entered a new order for me and call me back.
Since they hadn't, after a few hours, I called them back. What they did was issue me a credit. That's it, no new order.
So when the lady tried to enter a new order, it wasn't on their Web page! Then she tried to call it up again, there it was. Hmm, the random Web page trick happens to HP folks too. The problem now is that the new projected ship date is 9/15.

It seems the 3900 CD in 54XX packaging is a common problem. I called yesterday to report it and HP told me that it was a known problem and they were halting the shipments until they had it fixed.

I would rather wait a little extra for them to make sure that my *next* shipment has the *right* CD. That's even after the long wait.
What I really hope is that if it looks like there will be a significant delay that they will be honest about it and keep me and the other folks updated in a timely manner.

Can anyone tell me where I can go to order the upgrade? I've visited this site: http://h50043.www5.hp.com/ppc2003/nz/welcome.html, which is no help at all.

I received the disc for the 3900 upgrade from my 5455 order. I installed, not looking at the CD first since the rest of the documentation had 54XX all over it. Well, oddly enough, it doesn't install the upgrade but reflashes the old rom back on, kind of like you hard-reset your device. They called me yesterday to verify if I had the right version or not and when I told them the disc said 3900 and the documentation all said 54XX, they told me they would send out a new disc that day (yesterday).
I did ask if they wanted me to send back the one I received (3900 upgrade) and they told me I can either toss it or find someone that it can benefit. Hmmm. Ebay?

Wow, rberry88, they told you they'd send you a new disc that day? Interesting, they had to place a new order for my replacement and they said it would be Sept. 15. My order still says that, like I believe the ship/delivery dates on their order status page.
They told me the same about the disk I received, trash it unless I have a use for it.
Is/was there actually an iPAQ 3900? Haven't looked very hard but haven't found a reference to that specific model, just "3900 series".
Here's why I ask: Couldn't find the ROM files on the CD, though I probably wasn't looking for the right thing. The order site lists different parts for the 395x and 397x. I have a friend w/ a 3970. FWIW, it did not like it when he tried to upgrade. The upgrade aborted, so he's okay.

I found it kind of funny they used the term "that day" in response to when I asked when it would be shipped. They did tell me that they didn't want to place it as a new order since that most likely wouldn't ship for at least 2 weeks.
I wonder if you can pull the programs off of the 3900 disc that we received and use them separately??

Yeah, I figured it would be better for them to try to take care of it instead of me placing a new order. But it's what I had to do. They said they would credit my account, check on the problem then set it up for a new shipment, then call me back that day. (Huh? Credit my account? Wonder why I thought they were making it worth my while for the screwup if I was going to get the right thing...)
Several hours pass, no response, was getting to the end of business, so I called them back. They had credited my account but that's it, no trace of any new shipment or order. So all they would do is place a new order.
As to the programs on the CD, hmm, I wondered that too. Possibly so, though if I try, will make a good backup first.
