View Full Version : Camping with my Axim

Well, I spent 10 days in the woods with my Axim and here is what happened:
I used it to keep my checkbook, schedule some calender items, and read for anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours each day. The first battery I brought lasted from Friday afternoon until the following Thursday, at which time it was down to 25% and I switched to my backup battery. The second battery was at about 80% when I got home today. I was very pleased with the performance, to say the least! And though the weather varied from blastedly hot, to cold and damp and rainy, my little buddy seemed none the worse for wear. It was really nice to have it there and be able to read without a flashlight, plus with the damp weather I don't think a paper book would have survived nearly as well.
So in case anyone was wondering where I've been for the past week, that's where, I'm not going to try and catch up on posts that I missed, but I'm sure I'll be back posting with my usual vigor shortly!

So did you load anything *special* for the camping? I am very impress with the topo maps on the PPC. Seems like you might have picked a good time to go to, where you effected by the power outage?

Nah I didn't need any maps or anything where I was, it was just for entertainment :)
I wasn't affected by the power outage at camp but I don't think we were affected by it at home at all either. It didn't seem to have gotten as far south as Philly.

I just went camping last week as well! But I didn't bring any of my pocket pc's.. I'm definitely too afraid that something will happen, especially since where I went was on a canoe trek in the Adirondacks! Plus don't you think bringing a pocket pc would make the trip lose some of it's "rugged outdoor away-from-civilization" aura? It's a convenient thing to have, of course, for eBooks, email, etc... But well I just think it takes away from having to use a flashlight to read a damp book... But well I guess I can only speak for myself

Just curious...were you using a protective case or a case of any sort for that matter. I still need to buy one to replacement the standard one.

I enjoyed reading this post and it reminded me of a survival guide I use to have on my iPaq 3600. It was (I believe) a military replication of a sort, maybe Army. It told what to do in case of snake bites, etc. Does anyone know where to find this? I may want to load it on my current 1900 series.
Thanks,
Lisa

It's here (6 bucks though)... (http://www.ebooks.com/item/025971.htm)
I seem to remember someone had converted the manual to .LIT and posted it, but I don't recall who it was or where it was posted...

Yes it could but I didn't let it. I did NOT use it to check email, though I could have with my cell phone, I chose not to. I did go online to check the weather once or twice but that's all the online stuff I did. I also did not take it out of my tent at all, when I was out and about during the day it was safe and hidden. I pretty much only looked at it in the morning to see the classes I wanted to take that day(yes there were classes you could take on my camping trip), and at night to do some reading. So I did not feel like my nature was invaded by technology too much :)
I didn't use any kind of case or anything like that either. I just left it in the tent; my tent was not WET just got damp because of condensation etc. I don't think there is any case that could protect it from humidity. I don't use a case at all though, just Write Shields.

I went camping last week too and took my iPAQ 5455 with me. I was in the Michaux State Forest in Pennsylvania, which encompasses three state parks in the area between Harrisburg and Gettysburg. Couldn't use it to check e-mail because there was no GSM/GPRS service on my cell phone, but I used it to read three editions of Pocket PC Magazine, play the entire third episode of Pocket EverQuest and, toward the end of the week, to check my calendar to see what I had to do when I got back to work. I totally agree with PetiteFlower about the dampness. All my camping gear and the few hard copy magazines that I brought with me were very damp from all the rain, but my iPAQ performed well and was one of the only things that didn't have to be scrubbed and hosed down when I got home! I had a spare battery with me, but with all the Everquest playing that I did, I had to recharge both batteries using the portable battery charger that we took with us to run my portable DVD player.

Good commercial for axims :D Anyway, do you always change the battery on 25% ? I have the habit of changing the battery after the axim went into sleep mode, and never have any data loss. Well, the coin cell backup works.
So in case anyone was wondering where I've been for the past week, that's where, I'm not going to try and catch up on posts that I missed, but I'm sure I'll be back posting with my usual vigor shortly!
So, is the vigor up and running ? :)

Ugh, not feeling very vigorous right now to tell the truth, 10 days of sleeping in the cold and damp isn't very good for one's health...
I never let my battery get down to 25% normally, I charge it every night or at least when it gets to about 40%, since it's not good to let this type of battery "deep discharge". I decided to change it at 25% because I didn't want it to get any lower and I wasn't in danger of running out of charge on the second battery since there were only 3 nights left at that point.
