Okay:

I am desperate to get the GPRS/GSM sleeve to work with my IPaq 5550 as I need the 128mb ram, etc. So... as the sleeve itself won't work on 2003 (for whatever reason, if anyone knows it would be great to find out), is there a way to downgrade the ROM to PPC2002?

Alas, I have purchased Running Voice GSM to use with my Ericcson T68i (works great BTW), and I bet that I could get THAT to work with the GSM/GPRS sleeve.... I am just wondering if it's the control software of the module that is incompatible and if we were to use a third-party, compatible control software it may work...

Anyone know?

No. HP would have to write a 2002 version of the ROM for the 5500's hardware. It differs from the 5400 in at least two ways - 128MB of RAM and no consumer IR. HP is on 2003 now and has no interest in 2002 for new devices. Have you asked them if they are working on driver updates so the sleeve works on 2003 devices?

Yes... We have asked and no one can get a straight answer. In fact, they cannot even get the device to work properly on the 2002 devices. Basically, the device never worked right, people who bought it waited months to get updates, and some are still waiting. I have a beta "internal" release of a fix for the unit, but it still won't work with 2003... I'm not really sure WHAT specifically doesn't work with 2003 - if it's the control software that auto loads upon installation of the sleeve, or something else specifically.

I know that many of the other GSM/GPRS devices rely on third-party control software like Running Voice GSM. If I can get a sleeve to try and work with Running Voice, I just may be in luck.

if you have the t68i, can't you just connect via the bluetooth?

Yep - but the phone died, and I'm tired of carrying two devices...
