View Full Version : High pitched sound...

I was using my h2210 today (as usual  ) when it started making an extremely high pitched sound. I turned it off, silence. I turned it back on, and back it came. If I tilt the device more than about 30 degrees in any direction away from head on, I can't hear it. :?:
I soft reset my ipaq, and it goes away for a second, then comes back. I backup and hard reset it, but as long as it is on (even for the hard reset screen), it makes the noise. :? It's akin to the noise that CRT televisions and monitors make that some people can hear and some can't. It's extremely annoying for me, and it's louder than the noise any television makes. I can hear it cutting through the max volume of the unit if I play music with the build in speaker.
Is anyone else expiriencing this? I just want to know before I exchange it for a new unit.

Try turning the backlight on/off to see if that makes a difference. Backlights do create some noise, and it's possible that's what you're hearing.
On the other hand, there's a very slightly staticy whine from my Axim regardless of whether or not the light is on (and it's more pronounced when a sound is "supposed" to play but the device is muted...).
I'm not the only one that has heard it, but few do.

It's not that, I tryed it... On the other hand, anyone over 40 that I asked can't hear it, so if i just go to a rock concert, all will be well...
Seriously, it's going to go back to HP tomorrow after I register it tonight

I had the same problem with my Axim. I sent it back and got a new one, and the problem (amongst others) came back within a week.

hmm... anyone with an ipaq willing to respond?
If it'll come back in a week, then I'm not sure that i would want to send it back... But I have other issues as well. Bad horizontal bars, a "grid" of dots that only shows up in direct sunlight with no backlight, the case groans annoyingly and the area of the case that goes around the screen is bowed above the screen at the portion that has the hp logo on top, giving dirt a place to get into the device between the case and the screen. By far the most annoying is the part of the screen you touch with the stylus. If you think of the flexible part that you touch with the stylus as a thick liquid with a skin over it, there is no liquid in a large (almost half the screen) portion in the bottom half. So when I touch the top half it's nice and cushioned, but the bottom feels and sounds like I'm directly touching glass. That can't be good. :?

Oh, I just remembered something else. When I take out the battery, The noise comes back even though it isn't on. But now, it's a "chirping" noise. I immediately put the main battery back in and try to turn on the unit. It refuses, so I am forced to soft reset it to get it back on. I check the charge levels, and the backup battery only has 20% left after less than a few seconds without the main battery. Probably has something to do with that. :?
I'll miss my baby while she's away

Yup - I think you definitely made the right choice. In the Axims, the buzzing sound is from the LCD and could indicate a short, which is obviously not good.

I have an iPAQ 3870 and have never heard any weird sounds like you describe. Yes, I'm over 40, but I can hear the 15-19 kHz flyback transformer sound from a TV that's been left on.
Maybe your audio system has some kind of problem.

no funny noises from my 2210. Closest thing is if the unit is on and i put my ear 1/4" from the screen, there's a little bit of a high-pitched noise, but definitely nothing noticeable (similar to the sound you get when you turn on the light on an indiglo watch).

I just called HP about half an hour ago. They were very helpful, spoke perfect english, and said that they would send me a box to send it to them in. About 5 minutes ago I got a call from HP saying that they wanted mine as soon as possible for a batch of defective units to study, so they will send a box with a brand new unit and a shipping label for me to send the old one back after I get the new one. Now that's service. I even get to keep my battery, CF slide and stylus. Now I'll have 3 batteries  HP will be at the top of my list for a new PDA the next time i'm shopping. They even said that they inspected the (brand new) unit that they are sending out, which would reach me in 1-2 days. 8O Mmmmm... Happyness. But now I have a few days to see what it's like to use a PDA as if I had a screen protector on it that doesn't change the feel in any way.

When I read your posts above, I thought, wow ... what an unlucky dude. So many problems with one little gadget. Then I read at your last post, and I think ... wow. what a mood swing. :D
Glad to see that you finally solve your problem though. Lets hope that there wont be any further 'batch' of problems with your new 2210.

I've been playing around with my new h2210 since work ended (yes, child labor!  ). The new one has no issues except the horizontal bar problem, which only shows up if I shake it vigorously. I did end up getting a third battery, fifth stylus and second CF slide from the replacment, as they said to ship it bare. Does that include the battery door? :) Seriously, I don't want to push my already great luck with this replacment. It was an excellent expirience with HP customer support, and I won't hesitate to call them again in the future (hope there's no need, though!).
