Fired by the earlier discussion of WEP I am prompted to ask my own WEP question.

For some reason when I enable a WEP key on my network I can no longer activesync with my wifi card - although, and this is important :D, I can still access network shares, terminal server etc. Disable the key and I can sync no problems.

Anybody got any ideas why this might be?

Very weird!

When you enable WEP are you really connected to the intenet or is it only opening cached pages?

Also when you enable WEP are you using a passphrase or are you using a hexadecimal key

Actually one thing that I cannot do (whether WEP is enabled or not) is access the internet over the network. This is also a bit strange as I can do that when the Jornada is docked and using activesynce pass thru or when I am using terminal server. Never managed to work this out but I am guessing that it is something to do with a firewall on the hardware router

Also when you enable WEP are you using a
passphrase or are you using a hexadecimal key

As for this I am using neither :D instead it is set to a 128k Ascii key.

ok now I understand a little more. One of the ''features" of PPC2k is that you can't hare a network config on the device that allows both Activesync and Internet.

Under Start, Settings, Connections you need to set the "connect to" to Work for Activesync or Internet for Internet.

Sorry I don't recall the exact thing but I am now using Wm2k3 and don't remember the ''old fashioned way"

Ahhhh - it all becomes clear. You have to love those microsoft "features".

Actually the connection manager is one thing that I am really hoping that they got right in Windows Mobile 2003. Still waiting for just the right device to tempt me away from my Jornada but when I do I hope getting connected will be more straightforward.

I've gotten around this limitation in WM2K3 but I'm not sure how I managed to get the config right. I can browse the Internet and ActiveSync through either my WiFi and Bluetooth connections without messing around in connection manager.

Now that it is working the way i like it I'm loathe to even look at it for fear of buggering it up

I just looked at your sig and see that you're an Aussie. Where are you from? Is it as hot in Ireland at the moment as it is in England? The heatwave is making the news here regularly.

Take care

Perth in the sunny west :sunny:

Yes it is pretty warm in Ireland at the moment (well my Irish standards!) but no where near as hot as it has been in the UK, up in the mid to high 20's most days for the last week. Hell I have even managed to get some swimming in - although swimming in the Irish Sea is a pretty chilly experience no matter what the air temperature. Imagine a cold bath with some ice thrown in for good measure!

Still it is good to see the sun it has been a pretty lousy summer up till recently. Looking forward to getting back to Perth for Christmas and some real beach weather!

That's simply not true. I have my iPAQ 3870 running Pocket PC 2002 set up so that I can both access the Internet and sync over WiFi. I have all three settings in the Connections settings applet set to Work.

I agree with Steve. I've got WEP enabled and I have my 3 connection settings set to work. I can access the internet and sync via Activesync.

Sorry - I stand corrected

Just curious though - are you getting out to the Internet by connecting to your PC via WiFi and then using the Internet passthrough or are you connecting directly to the Internet?

Hmmmm - okay so that leaves me with my original question. Any ideas why activesync works without WEP enabled but does not once I enable it?

I'm not a networking expert, so I normally look for articles to help. See these two:
Setting up a Wireless LAN, Part 1 (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,2783) and Setting up a Wireless LAN, Part 2 (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/articles.php?action=expand,2785)

Also, there's a thread at PocketPC Passion that's been helpful to me.
802.11b & Activesync (http://www.pocketpcpassion.com/forum/showthread.php?s=&threadid=23501)
It's a lot of reading, but it will probably help you solve your problem!

I connect to my WiFi router, which is connected to the Internet. I don't use any PC-based Internet Connection Sharing.
