Looking under the battery of my 5455, I see a small white card. Removing this card, it appears to be the physical size and shape of roughly a GSM sim card, from a cell phone. The card is just a plastic 'dummy'. There are contacts in the slot, but no contacts on the card.

I'm not positive about this, but I believe the reason the SIM slot is on a 5455 is because, when they originally released the 5455, they were already talking about another model (5555 I think) that would have GSM/GPRS radio built in. The way I understand it, they never intended for these features to work on the 5455, but to cut down on manufacturing costs (since the two models *5455* & *5555* would be made with most of the same parts) they put the slot on the 5455 as well.

So, it's of no use whatsoever?

No use whatsoever. The 5555 has the "slot" (more of a dent really), but no pins and it is covered by the warranty label.
