<div class='os_post_top_link'><a href='http://www.ipaq.net/' target='_blank'>http://www.ipaq.net/</a><br /><br /></div>There's a new site on the virtual block, and it's called iPAQ.net (sweet domain!). They're just getting started, and to help spur community participation, they have a contest on where you can win prizes just by posting! Pretty interesting approach. Up for grabs are a folding keyboard, a 128 MB SD card, and free software.<br /><br /><img src="http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/images/web/2003/targus_keyboard.jpg" /> <br /><br />"At iPAQ.NET, we like to reward our members for their contribution. Understanding that people will contribute to give back to the community regardless, I find that people should get a little something back for their efforts. You will find a chart below that outlines how we reward members for their contributions. Please realize that this point system is not perfect, it may even be unfair at times. The point of ipaq.net is to help educate iPAQ owners about their products and ofcourse have fun along the way!"<br /><br />They have a very fast server (love it!), and a cool way of highlighting the most active members on the front page.

Wow. Slick start. I wonder how much they paid for the domain name... not sure I like the points system, however. Interesting idea nevertheless.

Appears to be based on the IBuySpy or something similar, a .NET open-source initiative for websites. The site is interesting, but I don't approve of the spelling errors.

Kinda messed up how you must start your user name with an alpha :(

Hey Guys,

Thanks for the comments and suggestions.

The site is not using the ibuyspy system at all. The site is built off of the asp.net forums, I am a .NET developer actually so I extended the existing code base to handle the content management system using custom controls & skinning similar to how asp.net forums was built.

as for the spelling mystakes (joke), please post them here: http://www.ipaq.net/Forums/ShowPost.aspx?PostID=279

Thanks for the support, special thanks goes out to Jason D. for his community spirit!

Not too sure about that site. It says I'm an MCSE, MSCD, A+, CCNA, CCIE, PHD. But then I haven't created a profile yet. ;)

The other really neat thing is the My Forums link which lists the last 25 threads to posted in. Really nice for keping track of your recent posts (hint hint)

This is also iPAQ.org (http://www.ipaq.org) (which is how I saw it announceed, and how it's listed on my site). I do find the "Number 1 iPAQ Community" slogan a bit exaggerated, though. Dave's iPAQ (http://www.davesipaq.com) might take issue with it, too. :-)

This is easy to do here. Just do a search with only your user name in the search fields. That will show you all of the threads you've posted to in reverse chronological order.

Even easier than that: if you go to the front forum index, there's a link called "View your posts". (Here's a copy (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/search.php?search_id=egosearch) of the link.)

That's pretty cool. There are also View posts since last visit and View unanswered posts. Are these new? (Can you tell that I don't go to the forum index much? :-))

Nope, all three have been around. "View posts since last visit" is the exact same thing as the New Posts link.

Interesting thing... I haven't been able to access ipaq.net all day. Is it just my ISP?

salman

Could be. The domain propogated last week and its possible your ISP has lazy domain name servers.

or go to your profile, and click on 'see all post by 'yourself'' ... like this (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/search.php?search_author=Pony99CA).

I knew about that, but never liked the way the information was presented. For one thing, it shows all of your posts, not just the threads you've posted to.

Interestingly, it sometimes shows a different count than the "official" count that's displayed, though. That method shows I have 2711 posts, not the 2709 shown with my avatar (including this post). Somehow, two of my posts weren't counted.

Janak's count was even stranger; viewing all of his posts said he only had 4953 (and, yes, I checked to see that his Big Daddy J posts were there). I think the fix is in. :-D

Hmm, when I'm logged in, it says 5033 posts. :?

Who knows how many posts I've actually done...

Anyway, let's get back on topic please before Kati or Steve twaks us...

This forum needs an option to mark a post as off-topic before it's posted, and have it stand out from the rest of the thread in some way. Different background colour(s) perhaps?

Then subscribers could have the option to not see OT posts if they desire, But where's the fun in that? ;)

Back (slightly) on-topic:

I still cannot access ipaq.net (http://www.ipaq.net/) in any capacity on this machine. Other machines on the network can. I have no site-blocking software installed on this machine, not even a hosts file. Internet Explorer gives me a DNS error every time. I cannot ping the site. I cannot do a nslookup on the site. I can get to every other site i frequent, just not this particular one. But other machines this side of the router have no problems with it.

well, i was able to get to ipaq.net without any problems.

however, i did find the tagline "The Number 1 iPAQ Community!" to be a triffle immodest.

still, it will be an interesting site to keep an eye on and see how they do with their rewards for posting approach.

I can access it without any problems. Maybe they just don't want you there.

Seriously, can you access iPAQ.org from the rogue machine? That's the same site.

Same crap, different day. :frusty:

But I nabbed the IP from the machine on the lan that does let me on, and I can access it that way. But it's still difficult as I have to change www.ipaq.net to 64.85.17.253 in a lot of the urls there.

And I was so hoping to be able to win the 128MB SD card, too! :multi:

PS How do you manage to format the URLS in your posts so nicely on their system?

Perhaps the admins of ipaq.net decided that they dont want you there, after noticing your posts on this board. :rotfl:

Edited : Doh. Pony is everywhere. Should have read the last page before posting. But it is nice to see that I am not the only one who think that ipaq.net deliberately rejects any connection from your general direction. ha ha ha.

If I use the IP instead of www.ipaq.net I can access it. But then I have to swap www.ipaq.net for 64.85.17.253 for every single entry in the address bar, in order to see anything. Bit of a pita, ya know?

And the hosts file doesn't even map it automatically. :confused totally:

However, I noticed something interesting today:

This network is set up as follows:

cable modem
|
router - PC #1
|
wireless router
|
|------- PCs #2 and 3

I can access it from PC 1 but can't from #2 or #3. Yet I can access almost everything else from the latter two, the exceptions being the center of discussion of this thread, the gadgeteer (most of the time) and WebIS Forums (sometimes).

Does that mean that http://www.ipaq.org didn't work? That should have a separate DNS entry, I'd think.

 It works today!

The problem is this stupid ISP I'm on. I have no problems accessing stuff from the machine that's behind the one router, but for the machines that are behind the other one as well (never mind that it's not actually functioning as a router) I get the occassional "missing" site. And of course when that happens, it's at least three or four days before everything's up again.

Edit: Nifty control panel tip! :way to go:

Thanks. :-) For those who don't know what that meant (I even had to think for a bit ), see my tip on hiding and moving control panel items (http://www.ipaq.net/Articles/getTip.aspx?articleID=46).
