What I do to secure my home wireless network...

1. Use WEP, change the WEP key weekly.
2. Change the SSID to something other than the default. Change the SSID monthly.
2. Use MAC Address Authentication. Only allow certain wireless cards to access my LAN.
3. Turn off SSID broadcast.
4. Change the access point administrator password to something other than the default. Use a strong password. Change the password every six months.

Look at these pages for some general guidance concerning this issue for wired/wireless networks and home computer security...

Keep in mind that a persistent cracker/hacker can defeat any of these schemes, but it all helps in the long run to keep the barbarians outside the gates...

So far just testing wireless at work and only using WEP and the option to hide the network SSID.

once the system is rolled out properly we will probably add MAC filtering.

What really amazes me as I walk/ride/drive around is not just how many wifi networks I detect but how few of them have even WEP enabled

I don't use it beacuse I don't care. My computer with sensative information is behind a firewall and I encrypt anything that is very secure. If someone whats to check there email passing by, so be it. I do it to other people all the time. Instead of file sharing, it is bandwith sharing.
