Cannot sync over the inernet. I installed pocket host. I have it pointing to my IP. I set up the virtual server on my Belkin wireless router. I opened ports 990, 5678, 5699. It trys connecting but alwasy times out. Desktop says connected, PPC says connecting. They both time out. Am I missing a port.

Look at the Known TCP/IP Ports section of this page from Chris De Herrera for additional port information...

http://www.cewindows.net/wce/20/protocols.htm

An alternative is to ActiveSync via a VPN tunnel. Only one port needs to be open plus the data link is encrypted, safe and secure.

PpcVPN (http://www.oecadvantage.net/ajarvi/PpcVPN.html)

I tried both. I guess I will have to keep playing with it for now

I had a problem ActiveSyncing over the VPN link when I first tried it. The AS connection would timeout. The problem was traced to the fact that I had drives on three different desktops mapped on my iPAQ using NetUse. Once I unmapped the drives AS through the VPN tunnel would connect normally. This is over a 56K dialup link from my iPAQ 3835. Here is the thread that discusses this. It may help...

Good luck...

Is there some step by step guide to do this?

To do what?

If its ActiveSync through a VPN tunnel then look at the PpcVpn link I posted in my original reply.

Otherwise, you need to open the appropriate ports on any firewall/NAT/router device between your remote location and your desktop and try it. See the other link I posted in the original reply. Note that AS over a network is a manual process that is initiated from the PocketPC. Connect to the network/internet and go to Start -> ActiveSync and tap the Sync icon at the middle left of the window. This all presumes you have ActiveSync on the desktop setup to accept AS connections over a network or RAS link and that you have previously established a partnership via USB/Serial/Ir... Here is a thread from the PocketPC Passion site that deals with AS over an 802.11b link. The general guidance also pertains to a wired Ethernet network or RAS...

To setup a RAS link to your PC look at the readras.doc file in your C:\Program Files\Microsoft ActiveSync folder.

I would prefer to do it through VPN as to avoid secuity openings. But I have been having a hard time to get xp pro and my router to play nice together. Maybe I am opening the wrong port.

What router? For PPTP VPN you need to forward/open TCP Port 1723 and the router also needs to handle GRE Protocol 47 traffic. Some routers, like the Linksys BEFSR41, have a PPTP Pass Through feature that you would enable to pass GRE Protocol 47 traffic. Other routers may call it VPN Pass Through or something similar. Consult the router manufacturers web site, support line and/or user manual for help with PPTP VPN. It may also be a simple firmware upgrade that adds this feature to your router...

Any ideas on creating the connection using a Windows XP Home desktop?

Any ideas on creating the connection using a Windows XP Home desktop?

AFAIK, setting up the VPN server on an XP Home box is the same as setting up the server on an XP Pro box...
