okie dokie, it's finally here. after waiting for about 3 months, proporta delivered the case.

and here's my first thoughts after a few hours of ownership:

first of all, it's great. i like the texture, the feel and the design. it's well made, doesn't feel slim and slinky (which was my main concern) and holds the MDA firmly.
it's padded with some foam, probably adding some stability as well as holding the MDA securely.

you can now hold it up to your ear without having some leather flap dangling above your ear, the accept-call and end-call buttons are a little hard to reach with the cover closed. but that's ok since it means the screen is protected.

the only thing that dampens my enthousiasm is the way the case seems to distort once you slip in the MDA. while the cover closes perfectly when the case is MDA-less, it doesn't line up as well anymore with the MDA inside it. nudging the MDA a little seems to improve things a bit. or maybe i just need to "break it in" ;)

ok, here's the pics:

How easy is it to hold up to your ear when open?

I have same case for my iPAQ and I find it awkward to hold open at times. I think this would especially so when trying to hold it up to your ear.

that's why you close the lid when holding it to your ear.

Ahhhh.....very cool. I thought of that, but I assumed it covered the mic (I can't remember where it is on this device).

In that case, it sounds like a great case. I'm a case-a-holic and I use the Proporta for my iPAQ more than any other (including a couple VAJA cases).

OK, that sounded kind of dumb... :?

hehe :)

well actually yo're right. the mic "hole" is being covered by the cover, but it doesn't reduce the sound quality.

Ok... the nerd in me is coming out...
Does anyone else think the case looks like a "Photon Torpedo" from the original Star Trek?

The original proporta web site text a few months ago said this case would fit into the xda docking cradle, which seemed to me unlikely.

Does it work w/the cradle?

Also, how does the weight and overall bulk compare with the standard issue case?

i never weighed the leather case, but someone mentioned a difference of a mere 10g between aluminium and leather case.

the mda+case doesn't fit into the cradle, but you can connect the sync cable while it's in it's case.

Belt clip option? If so, do you have it and how is it?

Bottom line--> does it feel bulkier in your pocket, or about the same?? Thanks for sharing your first adopter thoughts with us!--mty

hehe :)
no, it doesn't feel bulkier at all, even a little more compact since it's not mushy anymore when you touch it.
but i'm not the person to carry it in the shirt pocket, i have it in a backpack most of the time, or in a side pocket of my cargopants.

i like it. you will too :)

Yes, but what about the belt clip. How does it feel? How does it support? Is it the ultraclip? I know that you can purchase one, but it doesn't state which type of clip it is... that would be helpful to know how the clip is made and whether or not it's "heavy duty." Thanks.

no idea. didn't order the belt clip since i don't like them.
