As the title put it, you can get it now from WinCESoft.de!!! Very elegant interface and seems quite stable so far playing MPEG-1 and DiVX files, with a little frame size problem when rotated full screen! But I'm not concerned since the developer admitted he didn't have a WM2003 device to test on so improvement is expected as soon as he gets one or gets feedbacks from users!

[UPDATE] Loading and unloading videos sometimes slow down operations a little but that's not new for PocketMVP. DiVX and MPEG-1 videos plays smoothly (with sound synchronized perfectly, of course)

heh - I had just submitted this as a news item to PPCthoughts when i read your thread... so I apologize in advance if they put it up and it looks like I stole credit from you. I found it independently - I swear! :)

anyways, should make my 10+ hours on buses this weekend traveling much more bearable.

Especially once my new 1 GB CF card comes in... drool...

I actually submitted a news to pocketpcthoughts, too, after some preliminary testing. :D

As usual, pre-rotated DiVX videos is best suited for the current build (.08072003) since there is a bug in rotated full-screen mode - the video frames are exploded so the frames do not fit to the screen. But the developer has pre-warned before posting the build that he hasn't gotten a WM2003 device on hand for testing so this job so far is excellent! I bet we'll see more improvement soon.

This is really interesting, is this project affiliated with the move BetaBoy is trying to salvage after Marc left the project at ProjectMayo? I know they've recently moved (http://corecodec.org/projects/pocketmvp) the project, but this looks like an independant rebuild from the source files. If these projects are unrelated, you should get together and make ONE place for the files. Good work, though!

True. BetaBoy has actually asked Frank W. (of WinCESoft.de) to contact him because this seems to be a duplicate work on the same open source software. It'd great if they work together or we might very likely see what has become of WisBar ...

Yeah, that was ugly with WisBar (not to mention confusing). Where did you see the contact request? Was it in the Project Mayo boards?

that's one of the big annoyances to opensource software, right along with it being its benefit - there's no real control over builds, so people can make their own projects off of the source, often leading to mass confusion. Then again, it allows people like Frank W to release fixed software before the people officially on the project have gotten around to it :)

Out of curiousity, what Wisbar problem? I have been using 1.1 since early last year on three different models of IPAQs, including my 2215, and am very happy with it. What have I missed?

I'm actually interested in thoughts about Pocket DIVX. I read so much about it but when I looked at the websites last year it looked very difficult to use, and the various guidelines were quite confusing. Do you have any pointers to a Pocket DIVX cookbook (or maybe, Pocket DIVX for Dummies?)

PocketMVP (the new name for Pocket Divx) is actually very easy to use - it's just a player. It's the encoding process to get files in the correct format/file size that's confusing.

The guide that I like the best is the one over at PocketMatrix.com (http://www.pocketmatrix.com/guides/dvd2divx/) - it covers converting from DVD and from an existing Divx file.

It's not very hard at all after you do it the first time. 8)

I personally do not see a problem of having PocketMVP branching out if the Project Mayo is going nowhere. WinCESoft is apparently capable of making a WM2003 compatible (with some little glitches) build of PocketMVP working while the original project was having difficulty getting around the problem.

As long as the build from WinCESoft does not evolve into a commercial product, it's actually benefting the software itself. Besides, I have no idea how much code of this build was from Project Mayo and how much was from Frank W. that makes it work with WM2003, with an elegant UI. But it is definitely a good contribution.

The Wisbar episode is the same to me. Lakeridge Soft took the source from Pelmar that doesn't have too much progress and made a pretty good build out of it and named it WisBar Advanced. It might not be that "advanced" technically but it does have more integration with the OS (PPC 2002 and WM2003) in my opinion.

In both cases, they not only branched out from the original but made it better so we can enjoy the result. What can be better?

Actually, the whole project is being moved to CoreCoded; it's just that Project Mayo wasn't really doing any work on it any more, so the dev team moved to Core Coded (where i'm assuming they'll get more help).

And the "UI improvements" was really just Frank W making one of the cooler available skins into the default :)

quite happy he made the build; i just think at least the PPC version should be integrated in with the rest of the project at some point to avoid confusion and to maximize the features of the software (rather than having two competing builds each missing a few features).

I wish the CoreCodec section was more filled out. It seems so hastily moved, without any real clear vision. It's going to have to pan out this week to really any signs of breathing.

You know what, after I got home and did some testing of the WinCESoft build of PocketMVP, I'm going to sadly put my tail between my legs and take it all back. This player is extremely stable! Compared to the three piece deal the other group had trying to piece together a EVC4 build, it can't even hold a candle to this. Just the fact that it doesn't crash is reason enough to love it.

Thank you very, very much! :werenotworthy:

I agree. It still has some of the anomalies loading/unloading MPEG-1 videos but compared to Project Mayo builds, it is very stable. And compared to MPEG-1 videos, streaming DiVX video over my wireless LAN is incredibly smooth and the MPEG-4 video quality beats MPEG-1, too.

I have never cared to play video with PocketMVP in standard mode until this build - I tend to enjoy the aesthetic design of the skin while watching the video. Ain't it strange?

I think for me it's all about the contrast between the movie and its background. With the old skin, there was this light border around the movie in standard mode. It was distracting, and made it hard to focus on the movie. However, the new skin is not only more eye pleasing, but the background is darker, making the movie seemingly blend in better.

Had a couple email exchange with Frank W. of WinCESoft.de. There's some sort of consensus that with this "interim" build from WinCESoft.de, we have something really solid and functional until (hopefully) Marc's return to Project Mayo. It is best that Marc decides what the future should be for PocketMVP.
