View Full Version : Axim Owners are usually younger?
David Prahl

From what I've seen in the real world (sorry, I know this is real too!), the owners of Axim X5s tend to be young. I'm 17, and the other people I know who have Axims are even younger!

I am 14 and i have an axim. I needed something to take notes in school faster. So i got the dell with the foldable keyboard. I got it because its inexpensive. The axim and the keyboard and screen protectors with tax and 2nd day shipping olny ran me 405 dollars. If you bought the ipaq 3955, thats all you could buy for that money, plus the axim has more rom, and a cf slot. Axim owners are younger because the axim is cheaper than all other pocket pc's

And we're smarter!
(Just kidding!)
Same for me. I was considering the Toshiba e330, which was about the same price. The Axim has everything I needed, and at a price I could afford.

If your hypothesis is correct, I would expect a lot of it has to do with the price.

You don't have to be young to recognize a great deal. When the Axim came out, nothing else could touch it at the price point.
I think did a good job when designing and pricing the Axim.
The pricing is certainly low enough to get young people who are on a tight budget. Just as important the Axim hes enough features to get customers like me, looking for a business and entertainment device.
The Axim still stands up to the new 2003 competion. There is nothing out there that I'm tempted to switch to.
Well maybe that new Sony.......

Of course not. But the young may only be able to afford the cheapest PPC.

Course that depends on your definition of "young" as well. I'm sure the 17 year olds wouldn't consider me young but the 40 year olds would! I'm 26 :)
I think a more likely possibility is that Axim owners are more likely to be first time PPC purchasers.

Yeah, I got the feeling that being 30, I am probably considered old for purposes of this survey.

At the ripe old age of 35 I was about to buy an Axim (I had actually ordered it) but when the new iPAQs came out I cancelled my order and odered an iPAQ 2210.
My main motivation for looking at the Dell was cost and dual slots. In fact, at the time the only other al slot device avaialbe in my part of the world was the Toshiba and it cost nearly double.
The iPAQ will cost me about $70 AUD more but it's smaller and seems to offer better performance.
I think that, in general younger people have less income and therefore will look at the lower cost devices. However, what makes the Axim special is that it is low cost but not low feature.

That is another reason why i purchased the axim. I am not a first time buyer, but my 3955 died, and i bought it used. Therefore i didn't get to use it or learn anything about it. So you could say i am a first time ppc buyer.
Peace

Actually, it might be even more accurate to say that a lot of people who are getting their first PPC are getting Axims (yes, I know there are exceptions ;)) because of the lower price point... And if someone is 50 they've had longer in which to have had a previous PPC. ;)
And yes, maybe "young" needs to be defined. If it includes the up-to-35 group, then the poll results seem to agree with you thus far. ;)

Heh the rashness of youth :D I'm 47 and still feel like a kid inside... if only I could get the knees to work
my mom is in her 70s and still feels young so how do you define young???

This poll was supposed to prove that Axim owners are younger.
My ideas never work!
Oh well, I guess I proved two things:
1.) I'm usually wrong.
2.) Axim owners are ALL ages! :D Long live the X5!

Well, keep in mind that since it wasn't a front page post, you're not really getting a full picture of PPCT readers, and even if you did, that's not a full picture of PPC owners. You could be right, but it'd be difficult to prove. So it has to stay a hypothesis, I think.
Your poll proves that all kinds of people are smart enough to buy Axims for all kinds of reasons.

Well i myself am 19.. purchased my axim myself cauz i got a deal.
I was told to buy the axim on some of the techy forums i visit.. It seems to be the most popular with the hardcore computer techy/geek compter user.
They all suggested it.
I guess cauz its speed, and price
im happy with it.. glad i picked it over osme of the other ppc
so i dont really think my age had anything to do with it(maybe the affordability is associated with age), but mostly due to the crowd I hang around

I think it's most popular with the techy types who don't have $700 lying around to buy the deluxe model Ipaq. Or for those who would have moral issues with spending that much money on a PPC. But for the REALLY hardcore types, money is no object and they want the latest and greatest and fastest etc. So they wouldn't tell you to get the Axim :)

Unless Jason or someone has reliable info on the average age of PPCThoughts forum readers in general, your poll is pretty meaningless. From being around the forums here, I get the feeling that the frequently contributing members' average ages are higher than those, say, at PocketMatrix.com's forums. Coincidentally, PocketMatrix discussions seem to frequently devolve into name-calling, with forum mods often joining in :)
You may want to make a second poll for comparison's sake for the average PPCThoughts PPC owner's age, regardless of manufacturer.

Really? 8O That's the most interesting characterization of a Pocket PC user I've seen... and, in any case, maybe you just inhabit a different borough of NYC than I (or, elsewhere in NYS). I've seen a few people in Manhattan subways using Axims and they look perfectly professional to me. Now -- as for Palm Zires, on the other hand...

You mentioned:
1. axim users are not young = axim users are old.
2. axim users are not professional.
3. axim users are dirty.
So, axim users are older dirty non-professional folks ? the kind of older dirty folks lying on the bench on parks ? the homeless folks ?
Now I am really confused.

Actually when I decided to purchase a PPC, my choices are the e750, 5450, and X5. The elimination process was very easy. The e750 was so squarish, doesnt feel right on my palm. It does not amplify the the 'cool' aura that I constantly emanate. The 5450 has no integrated CF (I hope pony does not read this post). The axim, on the other hand, feels at home on my palm, with the rubber grip, curvaceous shape .. and it has both slots. So, axim X5 it is.

...your poll is pretty meaningless...
I wouldn't necessarily say that. Part of good scientific methodology is to state a hypothesis, then test that hypothesis. Just because it's proven wrong or cannot be supported doesn't mean the experiment doesn't have value.
I think this poll did a lot to illustrate just how varied Axim owners are. I hope Dell is reading this thread and learning a thing or two.

I just mean "meaningless" in terms of really being able to prove the hypothesis, in the absence of a control group to reference. I don't really mean that the results can't be interpreted in any way - they've shown perfectly well what the average age of PocketPCThoughts members who own axims and vote in the online polls is (for what that's worth). But it's not a study you can extrapolate the rest of the Axim-owning world from. Granted, that's the nitpickiness of a scientist coming through there :). If the average age of PPCThoughts voters owning any PDA was, say, 80 years old - well, the Axim owners would then be quite young compared to the other PPC owners.

I had exactly the same choice. If the 5450 had both expansion slots that's what I would have bought. I have no interest in having to buy dumb expansion packs to get basic functionality.
It's sad that the 2150 has more attractive features to me than HP's top of the line model.
Oh, some days I do look rather clean.
I still think the Axim has the best price/features ratio of all the PPCs and I'm looking forward to the new products at the end of this year.

Ah, the foolishness of youth. Don't do it.
1. Long distance romances don't work.
2. If she doesn't already want one badly enough to have already bought one, she probably won't really put it to use. In fact, she'll probably just give it to some guy she's seeing while you're not there!
Seriously, hold on to it. There are many good reasons to have 2 PDA's. They make great babysitting aides. A couple of simple games on one can keep an otherwise obnoxious kid QUIETLY entertained for hours.

Ah, my friend, Long Distance Relationship is the ultimate test of a partnership. We have been seeing each other for 6 years now, 3 of which are long distance based. It is very hard during the first 1-2 months, but we are almost in constant communication. Now that she has the 2210 with her, we are practically side by side. PocketICQ is always ON on both our PPCs. Anytime we need to talk, we talk. That is the primary reason of sending her the 2210 :D

I love the logic that was used to come to the conclusion that axim owners are younger:
"I know a couple guys who are young who own axims therefore axim owners are young"
Thats like saying "I know a couple black guys who are tall therefore tall guys are black".
It's a logical fallacy. :)

I got the Axim X5 mostly because of the price and also because of the expandability. With the Axim I can add storage and connectivity simulatneously.
My Dad had a Casio E-125 and the backlight problem hit. He said I could have it if I could fix it. We tried to fix it but the parts are just too hard to come by since most E-125s broke down at the three year point (or so) and it had been only a little over 3 years. Thus every one who bought it was starting to try to get the parts as well.
So he got a H1910 and I wanted one still. So I got the Dell Axim:).
I'm 15 by the way.

The results of this survey, in my opinion, show nothing. Because you have not compared this Pocket PC to others. If you were to do that you would probably also find that the majority of users are under 35 and under for all devices.
It would be really interesting to see the results of a survey like that!
But the younger of us around would be more likely to buy an Axim IF we had done our "homework" and read around.
