What's the makeashorterlink page about? I've never seen that before.

It's just a way to make ridiculously long links shorter. :-)

That's pretty much what I figured. I just didn't know if there was more to it than that. Thanks.

I hope this doesn't become a trend like pop up ads did.

Normally when posting long links, people try to make a short phrase clickable instead of posting the naked URL, like PPCT (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com). However, for front page posts, currently those links cannot be shortened using that method. The only option is a naked link, which if long, can cause mucho scrolling which is annoying for a lot of people. So this is really the best (current) compromise.

It delayed my forwarding to the current URL by a few seconds. However, I was downloading a Microsoft Windows update at the time and subsequent clicks on the Sprint ads have loaded much quicker-- and not because of cache. Still, I was surprised to see any delay since I'm using a cable modem.

The only reason I used it, the first time EVER on this site, was because this was the link:

http://a.tribalfusion.com/l.click?clickID=YMGMOORSMONPOUHKMTKNUORJOOJJLBPPGKGELIASQTKOPPUCMSKDRGOJLFQPDQOPSGICZ&clickURL=http%3a%2f%2fadfarm%2emediaplex%2ecom%2fad%2fck%2f525%2d14696%2d7524%2d3%3fmpt%3d804469257

It cause side-scroll, but if that's what you prefer...

Oh, now you're in for it from Pony... and I'm moving the link conversation. ;)

Note: this topic was split from here (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=15115&sid=2aa76e8f6893e507d824292b93ea43b4), and the link under discussion appears at the top of the first post.

After being chastised by Pony (in a very nice way  ). I took the time to learn the phpBB format and now I shortlink everything. Never will I again cause the screen to scroll L to R.

Just structure the word like this:

penultimate!

(That's font size 5...)

Or, bribe Jason or myself to get the root password. :razzing:

Okay, this thread is beginning to get off-topic. Would you please take your comments about ultimate power of the website to a different thread. I might have to contact a forum moderator or something.

:rotfl:

Now back to makeashorterlink...

Nah. Between buying a new house, finishing that PhD thing, and moderating, I've got enough on my hands.

I thought we were scot free on Off-Topic. Ah well, it's good to have inter-moderator checks. :)

In any case, bringing the discussion back on topic: my big fear about Jason using shorterlink is that the link will expire, and then a year (or 20 years, we know PPCT is going to be around forever) from now it won't be useable, and we won't remember what it was. :)

Could be. Maybe the solution is to just not have the title be the link on the front page, and provide it in the text where it *can* be shortened properly.

Yes. I have done this before. However, the front-page posting interface is so nicely suited towards the top-posted link...

Just because it's in an off-topic forum, doesn't mean that there isn't a topic...

But you can stray off-topic as much as you like (I'll just move it to the HOF&S later)...
