So is it true that windows 2003 has a biult in sniffer? If I am out and about and want to find a network does my 5555 have all it needs to find one?

Is there a third party app i should get if i want to do this?

Thanks

For most places, Windows Mobile 2003 can find wireless networks automatically, as well as some drivers for cards under PPC 2002.

I don't believe sniffing is included; it's pretty intense on an active network and could chew up space on the device quickly.

However, most access points in commercial areas can disable the broadcast of the SSID, the magic key to access the network that you need to connect. Also, you'll run into WEP, EAP, LEAP, and other security protocols that you'll need to know before you can start sniffing.

So, for some cases, the 5550 will work out-of-box for finding networks. For very secure wifi, it will not, unless you are authorized, and that applies to sniffing.

Do you think that PPCs have strong capabilities to find vulnerabilities in the more secure networks found. It seems that pocket DOS lacks a lot of commands needed. But what else is out there to help ppcs with this.

Please don't call it a sniffer. That is something different. If you just wish to find out if a WiFi network is available the WM2k3 connection manager should suffice.

Sniffers inspect packet traffic. They actually watch the data. I recommend you do not do this for fun as in most cases it is illegal.

Check out www.netstumbler.com

You'll want to get hold of ministumbler. It's a superb application that will locate broadcasting SSID's, indicate if they are encrypted or not, even tie into a GPS if you have one connected for mapping your "hotspots."

MiniStumbler didn't work on my 2215 + Ambicom WL1100C-CF.
Do you know if there's a sniffer that works under PPC2003 with an Ambicom Card? Preferrably Freeware.

I think ministumbler is the only free one around, and unfortunately it is fairly restrictive in the cards it supports. A good one that may support your card is PocketWiNc ( http://www.cirond.com/site/products/wifispotter.htm )

They do have a trial, so you can try-before-you-buy.

PocketWiNc is only a Network Spotter, not a Packet Sniffer.
I'm looking for something more like Ethereal.

PocketWiNc isn't supported on WM2003 yet. They are working on an upgrade to v1.2, said it would be soon, 1-2 weeks?

vxSniffer (http://www.cam.com/vxsniffer.html)
AirScanner Mobile Sniffer (http://airscanner.com/downloads/sniffer/sniffer.html) <- freeware

I haven't been able to get AirScanner Mobile Sniffer to work on a H2215 w/WM2003. Are you running it on WM2003? I really liked it on my 5450 and 3975, just never got it to go the 2215 yet.

Thanks

Just deleted the DLink drivers, loaded the latest for 2002 from their site, reset and the drivers are using WM2003 Zero config. I then went and dl'd the latest PocketWarrior, and it is working also now.

pocketWiNc now has a WM 2003 version at http://www.cirond.com/site/products/wifispotter/download_software.htm

Has anybody tried it on a iPAQ 5555 ?

I just tried it on a 5555 and it works perfectly with the built in wifi. This definately calls for a celebration. :)

I got some help from Mark @ cirond for Pocket WiNc 1.3 for a h2215. It requires the Intersil drivers version 2 or greater (which are very hard to find) or I think the Senao for the D-Link 660w to work with WiNc. I have been able to use Pocket Warrior, but I also paid for WiNc when I had the 5450, so I would like to keep the value. Hopefully D-Link will upgrade sooner or later.
