I have a preproduction model of this and it is EXTREMELY useful... if you want to use your headphones or plug into a stereo using RCA cables then this is what you need. Although i like the fact my hp 1840 came with one that fits the 1940 :)

Is this the same adapter that is used in the T-Mobile PocketPC Phone Edition?

No :( The T-Mobile's pins are arranged as "output, output, input". The i700's are arranged as "output, input, output". From what I've heard, Samsung set it up this way so you can use a standard 2.5mm headset without an adapter. Makes more sense that way if you ask me...

How does the phone work while the adapter is connected?
Does ringing get routed through the adapter or the internal speaker? Is the phone's built-in microphone still active? Can speakerphone be activated? Please tell all :-)

I hate adapters like this. The mere fact that they are needed just show that this industry has a lot of maturing to go through yet.
