View Full Version : What are the limitations to Mobile2003 file system?

I've recently switched from PalmOS to PPC, and my new h2215 running Mobile 2003 is easy to use and the apps (especially Pocket Excel) are much better than the Documents-to-Go strategy on Palm.

But one thing that has really frustrated me so far is the apparent OS restriction on being able to open documents on storage cards. Unless I am mistaken Pocket Word and Pocket Excel (and other apps I have downloaded and installed) only search the "My Documents" folder and one sub-folder level on an SD or CF card (I have both installed). I find this very frustrating since it forces me into a very "flat" file hierarchy, which, in turn, makes for lots of scrolling -- especially on the Word and Excel "Open" menus.

Am I missing something?

I have downloaded and installed Pocket Explorer and it lets me navigate to files and open them, but it also sometimes opens a Pocket Notepad (TXT) file in Word rather than in Pocket Notepad, even though the icon showing is a Pocket Notepad icon, and not a Word icon. I have Word set to open only Word (DOC) files. So, apparently there is a related registration problem here, too.

Any ideas or suggestions?

No, it's just a stupid restriction that some applications have.

Get a registry editor and ensure that .txt files are handled by Pocket Notepad. If you don't have one, a free one is available from Philippe Majerus (http://www.phm.lu/Products/PocketPC/RegEdit/).

Any ideas or suggestions?
Be glad you have a file system. :-)

If Pocket Explorer is acting screwy (I tried it for a few months), try Ghisler.com's Total Commader CE instead. I like it better. YMMV. (It also has a nice notepad app included.)

And, to be more precise, it's a stupid restriction on the "Open" dialog, and that's all. Nearly every CE program supports arbitrary folders, but finding the file is tricky.
