Now that the 5550s are appearing I was just wondering if anyone had tried to copy the 5550's ROM image over to a 5450? Might be fun while waiting for the official upgrade. (If you're brave enough to risk paperweighting you 5450, that is!)

Theoretically, it should work as the two units are identical
in all aspects aside from minor changes with the CPU and
total Memory. All other internal components are idetical
(wlan module, controllers, bioswiper etc) So the same
can be said about applying a 5400ROm to a 5550, then
again, whould would be crazy enough to to do that?

I decided I needed a new paper wieght so gave it a try. First I loaded the 3900 linux bootloader although flakey it does allow a serial connection to be made. I then loaded a 5550 image and then the 5550 bootloader. Took it out of the cradle hit reset and NOTHING  I'm fairly sure I should have left the 5450 bootloader on but you make a choice then have to live with it. Now where did I put that jtag flash unit.

This whole process is inadvisable. The 5400 and the 5500 are different units. They have different internal hardware.

Unless you want to incur the charges required to have HP service the unit, I would not recommend this.
