ftp://ftp.compaq.com/pub/softpaq/sp24501-25000/SP24574.exe

HP has released updated firmware for the WLAN chip in the iPAQ 5400 series. You must have the 1.11.xx ROM installed before applying this firmware update. Enhancements and fixes include:

• Adds LEAP authentication client support
• Enables connect with a WLAN Access Point that supports both 802.11b and 802.11g

You can download the full readme file here. It is not on their support web site yet, but files often make their way to the FTP site a few days before the web pages are updated.

Just an FYI - those of you that want this and don't have the 1.11.xx ROM yet can download that at http://h18007.www1.hp.com/support/files/handhelds/us/download/18285.html

Works fine with my Linksys WRT54G (latest firmware) in Mixed mode.

You can also perform the update over active sync using the wireless as I leave my cradle at work and use WLAN at home

Works fine on my 5455. I was kinda hoping the signal strength meter issue would have been fixed with this but it wasn't.

After clicking "Start Update" the progress bar gets two blocks and then I get a dialogue box thats says "Error, please reset this device ad re-run this application called 'WLAN ROM Update' from Start Menu'.

If I do that I do not find this on the start menu or indeed anywhere on the ipaq! I do have version 1.11.19 ENG.

oh well...

edit: ok a hard reset sorted that problem (sigh!)

Is this meant to show up somewhere? I can't see it

Just remind- my experience- you need to turn ON your WiFi before you can update.

Gosh... I am a bit late... see my post... its the problem... nothing about hardreset... I just pull the battery out for couple seconds, plug and turn on, then turn on WiFi, start the patch (its located under \Windows\WLAN ... Update) and then things go smoothly (without bothering hardreset...)

Model: h5450 with rom update.

I got my Linksys WAP56g to work :D Signal strength looks about right with the PC-Card strength.

Thanks HP for finally addressing this issue! And thak you IEEE for approving the 802.11g standard. I was suprised that PPCThoughts didn't cover this story.

Correction:
Signal strength status is NOT right. However, so far I have not tested whether there is a link between the status and actual distance.

The best signal strength I can get is in the forty percent range! And that is within feet of my Access Point. With my old Oronoco card I could set in my driveway and connect to my Access Point. With the 5455, I get disconnected setting in my living room. It would seem my download speed has been improved, that is what DSL reports is telling me, but it feels like pages are taking longer to display.

Module Release Date 02.09.05

My ROM version is 1.00.10 ENG

Please don't try installing 5400 driver and ROMs on the 5500. That is a great way to get a paperweight.

Thanks for your reply. I cannot get this dang wireless to work now! AHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH no errors, I get the green light, it find my network, and says it is connected...but when I bring up IE it tells me the page cannot be found.

On my 5455 I went into the network drivers and put in my statis ip...but on the 5555 I don't know which network adapter is the wireless one.

Any help would be great.

Thanks Again

Google for vxUtil and install that. see wht your IP config is, see if you can ping www.yahoo.com, etc.

WEP? MAC filtering? SSID-broadcast disabled?

Best way is to start with a clean slate and work up from there. But try Ed's suggestion first.

Well I got it working.... but very slow. Anyone else notice this?

I have tried both IE and Netfront.

Is there no status thingy like the ppc 2002 had? with signal strength, channel, etc???

Thanks
Thanos
