These finally work for me!

In a somewhat unrelated note, I have another "hip hip hooray" for the Pocket Backup software that came with the 2215. I had read of many folks having to hard reset their devices (sometimes twice) to get the original Socket WiFi 2k3 devices working. Well, I figured I had no choice but to do the same, but just in case, I backed up everything before hard-resetting.

Well, after hard-resetting, I was frustrated to find that the original Socket WiFi 2k3 drivers still weren't working for me. Then I decided to re-download the drivers and that's when I happened to see that Socket had released a new set. I tried them and they worked! Now, I'm thinking back that had I known about these new drivers, I wouldn't have tried a hard-reset.

No problem! I restored from my backup (took all of about 2 minutes to re-load my PIM data and about 20-30 programs with all of its registration info and config), then installed these new drivers, and voila!... back in business!

This is good news for the Socket card users.

But for us Linksys CF users - still waiting..... :grumble:

Take a look at this post (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=6017) of mine.

Ohh, Poma :) (the "m" looked like "r n" and they misspelled the end with an "o")

P.S. I was also curious, do ya'll recommend WinXP's native "zero-config" or Socket's driver for this card?

I'm confused, I downloaded the new version but can't see the familiar Socket Manager...is it a separate download?

The Socket Mgr that you're accustomed to in 2002 isn't here. Everything is embedded within the Connections menu. Upon inserting your card, your PPC2k3 device should detect the any WAPs nearby and ask you whether you want an Internet connection or Work connection.

If you need to configure any Socket settings, go to "Settings->Connections->Connections->Advanced->Network Card". From there you'll see if there are any WAPs nearby and what your status is with that WAP. Clicking on a WAP will open up the WiFi settings.

Thanks, ok it works now. The firs time I tried I wasn't in the vicinity of an AP.
Can't say I'm very impressed with that manager though...the latest Socket one was great with the IP status, the release, refresh, etc...Looks like I"ll be going back to pocketdhcp for that!

I've got mixed feelings about it myself.

On one hand all the settings are cleanly embedded within the operating system, so I'd imagine it takes less overhead/memory. MS did a nice job of improving the connection manager, especially with WiFi support, but I did really like the legacy Socket manager.

Yeah I also don't like using the built-in WiFi manager, it has no features! No real-time signal strength, no stored profiles, nada. It kinda sucks.

This PocketDHCP sounds interesting (any other recommendations?). Too bad the older Socket driver doesn't work...

Well there's stuff like PocketWinC too but I found it to be cumbersome. I can't see why Socket couldn't make their WiFi manager work in WM2003. Maybe they've been told to do something else with their time ;-)

PocketDHCP is a tiny app that requires no install. It's great but only for the IP/DHCP part, not the WiFi

Sounds great. One hotspot I'm in a lot of the time doesn't use DHCP (requires manual IP assignment). But most other places I can just leave it on DHCP. Thus I've had to keep deleting/re-entering manual IP everyday. That's why I wanted stored profiles (like the IBM Access Connections I'm used to on the ThinkPad T40 laptops).

P.S. Just to double check, is this the app you're referring to: http://www.geocities.com/lincomatic/software.html

I just Googled it (all my PPC software meta-list links are really old and outdated)...

That's the one. I use it extensively. I just hope it'll work with WM2003.

So I guess it just displays your WiFi info conveniently on one screen, but doesn't actually let you change anything?
