It looks, however, like these MS dictionaries are only to use with MS reader, they are not stand-alone dictionary programs. There isn't even an executable file in the downloads, just a file with the extension .lit.
I am also interested in finding good foreign languagage dictionary programs, as well as thesauri, etc. I asked a question about it last week, you could probably find the thread (in this forum), a couple people suggested different programs.
If you look on a PPC software library such as Handango, and go to the topic Education, then language, it appears that there are many such programs. They seem all to be shareware, that you can download and try before you buy. I don't know if the downloadable versions are limited in some way or not.
I downloaded a few, but since I am still waiting for my first Pocket PC (an IPAQ 2210) to come via UPS (it's supposed to come tomorrow!), I have not tried any yet.
If you try any such programs, please review them for us. I am also interested in German, as well as Spanish. Monolingual dictionaries in those languages, as well as ones translating to English, as well as synonyms, grammar references, etc.
One company that seems to make a lot of such dictionaries (in every conceivable language) is called "Ectaco". (I wonder where that name comes from?) I believe someone mentioned them in a response to my post. Of course, not having tried theirs yet, I cannot review their programs.
I even saw programs listed as "Talking English-Spanish Dictionary", etc. (including from the company mentioned above). In other words, you say a word in one language into the PPC, and it says the translated word in the other language. (I would hope with a screen display showing the word spelled.) My first reaction was "I don't need that, I can pronounce German or Spanish from seeing the word in print, I don't need to hear it". But then it occurred to me, that if it really worked well, there would certainly be an advantage on the input side. In other words, you wouldn't have to input the word you want to look up via the touch screen, attached keyboard, etc., but just say it. (I certainly would want to see the resulting translated word or phrase in print though, not only hear it.)
However, I have my doubts about how well such a program could work. I could be surprised, however. Has anyone reading this tried one of these '
"talking dictionaries"?

I'm very fond of the dictionaries and references available for the Mobipocket Reader. www.mobipocket.com. they're not free, but worth the money.
