maybe I missed something somewhere, I search in earnest but I can't find a string addressing this. Where can I get ppc 2003 and/or can it be installed into a ppc 2002 device?

Sorry, I'm fairly sure you're out of luck. I don't think Toshiba will offer an upgrade for the e335. You can see this thread. (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=13954&highlight=toshiba+upgrade) (btw, I got it by searching "toshiba upgrade" and selecting "search for all terms.)
