Kudos to Dell for having this ready to go so quickly, and for pricing is at a reasonable level. You done good Dell!

Still no news on a new Axim?

I should have bought an Axim instead of shipping my e740 back to be repaired!

Now we wait for HP

I hope HP, Toshiba and the other vendors take note of this. The only thing that makes this an easier upgrade for Dell than the others is that Dell's product range is much smaller and therefore an upgrade is probably much easier to do.

When I hear of the poor treatment Toshiba and HP have given to their customers I am glad that I chose a Dell and that I have sold my iPAQ. :grinning devil:

The really disappointing thing about HP is that they set the standard for upgrades with the 320LX a few years ago when they shipped a new, user ugradeable ROM chip when CE2 was released. Now, it seems that devices that have been on the shelves for less that a year have no upgrade path, even though the presence of a Flash ROM implies upgradeability. :soapbox:

I guess the other downside is that resale value on some of the Toshiba and HP products just fell through the floor.

:( I should not have chosen a Casio for pocket PC. I don't think I'll ever see any PPC 2003 for Casio E-200.

Just ordered and got a 10% discount for some reason. Shipping was $5.50.

Thanks for the heads-up.

Anyone seen any benchmarks of the Axim with 2002 vs 2003?

Is the one labeled AximSite supposed to be an Axim running 2003?

I guess what I want to know is what kind of performance increase I may get on an Axim 400mhz with the 250 processor by upgrading.

There is a review on AximSite of an X5 running Windows Mobile 2003. I bleive that the benchmark reffered to as AximSite is that.

However, I am not sure if the two benchmarks are of the the same hardware (ie both with the 250 cpu but one running pocket PC 2002 and the other with Windows Mobile 2003)

HP directs you to their upgrade site at and states that the upgrade will be available on June 26th. Pricing is $29.95. As of this morning, the site is still not ready.

Upgrade site is at http://www.hp.com/sbso/special/ppc_upgrade.html

The Axim site benchmarks are a 250 with 2002 vs a 255 with 2003, so not quite apples to apples. Knowing how Jason loves the benchmarks, I figure he will have something eventually.

As soon as I can get the upgrade, you bet, I'll have some solid benchmarks - but that will likely be quite some time from now.

Got my order confirmation on the upgrade. Est ship date is July 25.

Hopefully they will beat the ship date like they did on the machines for most people.

Can anyone get any PocketQuake benchmarks on the PPC2K3 devices? The Asus A620 gets 18 FPS in demo1.dem.

Thanks for the info! So did they let you order the upgrade early or do we have to wait until July 7th?

OK....I broke down and ordered the PPC2003 upgrade...looks like today is the last day for 10% off software at dell.com. I'm still unsure of what potential performance increases may (or may not) be gained on the Axim Advanced with the older PXA250 chip.

Ok, really stupid question, but I assume if I upgrade, I will have to reinstall my programs again? Will I lose anything in RAM? Lastly, if you upgrade, I assume you can't downgrade back to 02 either correct?

I can't find it on the Canadian site either- but at least they updated the Axims to say "Pocket PC 2003 Premium."

When flashing my iPaq 3660 to PPC2002 (done this about five times because I had carepaq ;)) I always had an option that said something like 'backup old flash rom', so I assume that it's possible to downgrade on my ipaq and maybe they still let you do this on the newer iPaqs ?

Well, I went ahead and ordered it also. It was only a small fee, and with the 10% discount, I just could not pass it up.

I'm not looking forward to re-installing all the app's an my Axim though!!

Correct - but he has an Axim, and I don't know if Dell will give users that option. :-)

Eventually www.handhelds.org will get a bootldr running on the Axim, so you can flash ROMs as you please.

Looks like all the Axim owners that run Windows 2000 are out of luck.

Well, at least it gives us a chance for some spring cleaning. :?

Personally I have been trying all kinds of stuff in the knowledge that at some point I would do a hard reset, install the firmware upgrade and then install the PPC 2003 upgrade.

The order code for the UK is 750-1-356 by the way. When I called today the sales guy said that the upgrade was unavailable till the 15th and he did not have an order nr available. I said that I had the part number and that enabled him to find it on his system. He said that they expected it to ship towards the first week of July.

See:

http://dellware.euro.dell.com/dellstore/dellware/config/default.asp?b=DukLOSKU-750-10356&s=uktra&v=d

£22.33

A bit more costly than originally quoted in an e-mail from Dell Customer Service... but this includes freight. This is probably because of the USD:GBP rates

Jonathon Watkins
06-29-2003, 10:53 PM
Yes, and don't forget VAT at 17.5%. £19 plus Value Added Tax brings us to £22.33. A fair price really.

Does ANYBODY have any info on how those of us in Canada can obtain the upgrade? No reference to it at all on dell.ca, no replies to emails sent to Dell sales...I don't want to call the sales line and sit on hold forever.
