View Full Version : How PO'd are you that your iPAQ 1910 is a dead end

I bought an iPAQ 1910 a little while after it hit the market. I love the form factor, which to me is VERY important. But in hindsight I would have waited for the 1940.
No SDIO, no PPC 2003, no bluetooth, no WiFi, and apparently no upgrade path whatsoever.

I'm "annoyed." I love my little 1910, but I've accepted the fact that it was pretty much obsolete the moment I purchased it. I'd love to be able to upgrade to WM2k3 for the XScale optimizations - wouldn't the 1910 be a zippy little machine then? But since the 1910's limited hardware can't take advantage of the other improvements, which have to do with improving the wireless experience, I've decided it just doesn't matter that much.
I've been really happy with my 1910 and it's served me well. Well enough that I don't feel the need to rush out and buy a new Pocket PC right this minute. I'm looking forward to the new JVC models, thinking about Toshiba (despite the bad press it's been getting lately), and anxiously awaiting news of the much-rumored Dell X7. I'm just going to wait and see. In the meantime, me and my 1910 are doing fine.

Just my personal rant, but, based on my past experience with JVC electronics, I don't think I could bring myself to purchase any JVC product ever again. Every single solitary one has died on me. The latest, 3 DVD Disc changer. I will read the reviews on it, but, I've been jaded.

I know. But deep inside I was just hoping....

Yes it would  ! I'm not that desperate for the SDIO (although it would be nice to have that option), but I would like a speed improvement. True, I'm quite happy with the way my 1915 performs, but wouldn't we all like to see it just a bit more instantaneous? They could probably fit PPC2003 on that 16 MB ROM if they really wanted to, but I guess they're hoping for more suckers like me, who voted 'Pretty Mad, but I'll sell my 1910 and get a 1940'...
Come on, give us the PPC2003 upgrade! :bad-words:

I think SDIO is a hardware issue. I don't think 1910 owners are ever going to have SDIO :( .

-Class action?
-boycott all low end h1940/1930?
-spread the word to stop buying h1910 if upgradability is important?
-What were HP thinking when they release h1910 without giving clear indication that it's non upgradable. Is buyer suppose to be able to read mind which HP PDA wil be upgradable and which won't?
-HP is blaming Microsoft for h1910 non upgradeability. (there is no 2k3 that fit 16MB)
so what does Microsoft have to say about this? They are knowingly agree to bend the upgradeability path for h1910?
.........hmmm......
any expert?

I really don't think it's that big of a deal. I was just happy to get an iPaq for under $300. If I recall correctly, HP didn't even design the 19xx form factor - it was some Asian manufacturer that shopped the design around to various companies. HP probably didn't expect it to take off the way it did. Now that it has, they're extending the form factor to the 1930 and 1940 series, both of which have SDIO.
Since the 1910 has absolutely no wireless capability, I'm not that upset that I can't upgrade it to WM2k3. The only thing that bothers me, a little, is that this will probably have a negative effect on its resale value. But I might not even sell mine anyway, at least not on eBay. I'll probably give it to a family member or sell it to a friend for a nominal cost.

Haha. Hey Fishie, let me know how things turn out in the US. Remember, if you need to unload anything, you've got a pal in Leuven with no PDA. :)

Hahahaha, make me an offer I cant refuse.
Or ask a Chinese friend to make me an offer I cant understand.

Who's to blame? HP or Microsoft? I don't know if this is a misunderstanding or not, but Brighthand writes this in their Pocket PC 2003 review:
Professional and Premium EditionsWindows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC is available in two configurations: Professional Edition and Premium Edition. Both editions contain Pocket Word, Pocket Excel, MSN Messenger, Pocket Internet Explorer, Windows Media Player 9 Series for Pocket PC, and Pocket MSN. The Premium Edition also includes Microsoft Reader, Terminal Services Client, and Pictures, a new image viewer and editor. The Premium Edition can typically be found on devices with 32MB or more of read-only memory (ROM), while Professional Edition is often found on devices with only 16MB of ROM.
Owners of existing Pocket PC devices running Pocket PC 2002 may be able to upgrade to Windows Mobile 2003 for Pocket PC. Check with your device manufacturer on availability and cost of upgrade software.
If this is true - I want my PPC 2003. If not... well, I am pretty happy with my iPaq 1915 as it is. I guess I just need to release some steam. I didn't like the fact that HP released the 1915 only 6 weeks before PPC2003 came out. I mean - they knew... But before I get all worked up again, I'll turn to my 1915, which still brings a smile to my face :D

:frusty:
Before I start this is not an attack on TawnerX, it is just a comment about lawsuits as a whole.
:grumble:
Why is it everytime that something like this happens someone brings out the "Lawsuit" card? At no time did HP say that this unit was upgradeable. I understand the frustration about not being able to upgrade to Mobile 2003, but there will always be things in the computer industry that can't be upgraded to some new thing that comes out.
This is a fact of life, nothing can change it short of a OS re-write and somehow I duobt MS would do it. All the 1910 owners would be better off convincing HP to give you a credit towards a newer unit.

Of course, the iPaq 1910 is (and thus will always be, so long as batteries can be bought) a fine PDA. Look at my Brighthand poll, Zire 71 vs. iPaq 1910: the iPaq beat it down pretty thoroughly, I'd say, and that's even before the 1940. Besides, the 1910 got an Editor's Choice from C|Net, and prior to WM 2k3, it was the fastest PPC 2k2 via overclocking.
Hey, I know all this is dental floss on a compound fracture--nothing can permanently banish the ever-approaching odor of obsolescence--but for the time being I would say that a healthy attitude of "So what; I love my 1910!" would be in order.
...unless you bought yours within the last couple of weeks. In that case, :bad-words: :onfire:  :bangin: :bawl: :rawr: :frusty: away!

Pure speculation...but I wonder if the 1910 really can't support SDIO? It's been said that the 1915 does, and hardware wise, they are theoretically identical. Perhaps WM2003PPC would support SDIO in the 1910?

Makes me want to stick my 1910 under running water then take it back to BestBuy for a shiny new 1940... That would be wrong though

It's starting to show that SDIO can be a simple firmware solutions. Handspring and other PDA manufactuers have released ROM's or updates to make it SDIO, so we'll see.

That's why I returned the 1910: the meagre 16MB ROM meant upgradeability to PPC 2K3 was not probable.
People should do their research before making such an investment. It's not like HP promised the upgrade for the 1910, then reneged.

But, as I stated above, there seems to be a PPC2003 Pro version that will fir on 16 MB, and I can't see why that's not being made available to 1910/1915 users.

VERY annoyed. I am going to give the 1910 to my girlfriend and buy myself the 2215  Might wait a bit more to see more info/details on the upcoming wi-fi enabled Axims.
