View Full Version : I think I killed ActiveSync!

I tried searching for this but didn't have any luck.

Last night I had my Axim in its cradle and I clicked on the task manager and accidentally clicked "Exit all programs" instead of "Exit current program" like I intended to. This shut down AS and I got the usual "not responding" error message on the PPC that I do when I shut down AS when it's NOT plugged in. Oops, I thought, I'll just unplug and replug the PPC and start it up again.....but it didn't work! Now every time I try to plug in and sync, I get this error:

"Synchronization could not be started because partnership information could not be detected on your device"

It starts to connect, you hear the little bell, and then the error comes up and the "disconnect bell" sounds and that's it.

What I have tried so far:
Restarting my computer
Soft resetting the PPC
Uninstalling/reinstalling AS
Upgrading AS to 3.7
Deleting/restarting partnership

I don't know what else to try, please help!

Other than a hard reset, I'm not sure what else to try. Do you have any storage media (SD \ CF) that you can backup your data to before a hard reset? If so, I'd give that a try.....sorry to not be more helpful....

Nooo not that! Because it also told me that my backup file(I back up every day with AS) "may be corrupted" and my trial of Pocket Backup is expired. Short of paying for it which I can't afford right now, does anyone have ANY other suggestions? Please?

Understood.....I wonder if there's some additional cleanup on your PC that could be done to remove any "residuals" of the prior partnership info. Folders like thse (note, I'm on XP and my device name is Axim...yes, real original! I'm assuming you can find these in same or similar locations OR you can do a Find File) :

Delete Files in C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Application Data\Microsoft\ActiveSync\Profiles\Axim

I'd also look at these 3 files in: C:\Documents and Settings\MyName\Local Settings\Temp

wcescomm.log
wcesmgr.log
wcesview.log

They may clue in some error numbers to look up on the MS Knowledge Base (or post for the real experts on PPCT.com!)

One other file to look at in the same folder:
wcesetup.log

Caveat: I'm just trying to help and I hope any of these thoughts don't hose up your AS even more....please be careful!

Thanks, I'll check the logs when I get home tonight.

I suspect I actually messed something up on the PPC rather then the PC but who knows?

Anyway I doubt it could get any worse(KNOCK KNOCK) but if it does I won't blame you :)

Well I looked at the logs, they seem like greek to me. They stay stuff like:

If anyone can tell me what that means, I'd be very impressed. I, however, worked from 8:30 this morning till 10:30 tonight and I just don't have the mental capacity for it right now. If I don't hear anything from you experts tonight I'll give MS Knowledgebase a shot tomorrow but I'll keep my hopes up till then :)

Have you tried to run the welcome.exe file. I don't know if this will help but it does seem to clear up other problems.

The what???

I looked in the MS Knowledge Base for various keywords \ errors from your wcesmgr.log file, but no luck. I then compared your .log file to mine (which was just updated when I docked a few minutes ago)....some observations:

Things seem to go wrong almost immediately. See here where you have errors that I don't:
2003-06-24 00:29:55 00000274 - ERROR: LoadServerObjects() returned 0x80070057, file: d:\medusa\private\apps\conn\repl\wcesmgr\.\partner.cpp, line 2496
2003-06-24 00:29:55 00000274 - ERROR returned in function CCeSync::CheckPartner. hr: 0x80070057

I'm curious what the path on the d:\ partition is....when I do a search on my drives for wcesmgr I only find the log file and the .exe.....I would imagine that you would find more than 2 based "wcesmgr" in the path name...not sure why.

After that, since no partnership is found, it almost appears that AS starts another instance of the same process:

2003-06-24 00:31:13 000001BC - ActiveSync second instance started, Cmd line: '/onconnect'

My gut instinct is that it's not something on your PPC in which case a hard rest wouldn't help anyway.....I'm thinking that AS or your partnership isn't getting fully removed (i.e., registry) when you took the prior steps to fix so far. Again, just thoughts and gut feelings....not very helpful yet, but I'm hoping someone else can use this information to help....

Welcome.exe is the program that ran when you first started using your Pocket PC. Where you had to cut and paste the appointment and align the screen. You get to it by going into file explorer and then navigating to My Device/Windows. Scroll to the welcome.exe file and tap on it. Now this might not help but I know that it fixes some problems with pocket ie.

Do you have activesync stored on your c drive or d? If d. Have you tried to delete the file that has the error and then tried to sync again?

PetiteFlower

See that's the REALLY weird thing--I only have one hard drive. D: is my CD drive. So that file doesn't even exist! I'm so stumped. I'm thinking that I need to uninstall AS again and try to clean the registry of it too, and then reinstall. Except that I'm not particularly comfortable editing the registry....but I guess I can find instructions on it somewhere.

Well, the uninstall didn't work again but the hard reset did. I managed to find another backup program, and I did sync my files so I didn't lose any of those, and everything's cool so it seems. Remind me never to do that again though!

Glad to hear your Axim is back.....I was beginning to think it was like the "unsynchable Molly Brown".....sorry, couldn't resist that bad joke!

I'm still curious as to what the real problem was, but I guess it all worked out in the end!
