View Full Version : Wondering about the Pocket PC Phone Edition 2003?

In case you're a Phone Edition owner, and are wondering about the update, here's the answer: the Phone Edition of the OS is finished and released to the OEMs, just like the normal Windows Mobile 2003 was. Now it's up to T-Mobile and the other carrier/OEMs to decide how they want to release it (if at all). The best thing you can do is contact your OEM or carrier and tell them you want Windows Mobile 2003 on your Pocket PC!

I talked to T-MObile tech support yesterday and was advised that they would have a statement in about a week stating that the upgrade was available, or at least have a date for it's release. 8)

Meanwhile Microsoft has a quick tour posted here:

I am sure there will be alternatives down the road as well.... Checkout http://xda-developers.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=1387

I think the upgrade will be worth it just to have the 2 separate volume controls!

When browsing Microsoft's Pocket PC 2003 features & as well thier Pocket PC Phone 2003 features (link above that Paragon Again provided), just wondering if the "Pictures" image viewer is omitted in the Phone Edition?

The "Pictures" image viewer isn't highlighted in the features for the Phone Edition so I was just wondering if that means it isn't included.

I don't think they omitted it Brian. I can't say for sure since I don't have a device running it. What they are showing in that preview are features that are part of the Phone Edition. Since the image viewer is part of the regular OS they just never bothered to show it. PPC PE at least for 2002 was the complete PPC 2002 plus the extra bits for the Phone Edition.

BTW, who's Paragon Again

That's kinda what I was hoping, that it was a feature that is going to be included but not just highlighted as it isn't Phone Edition specific.

Didn't you have the "Again" as part of your username? Or am I thinking of another board that you go by that? Sorry

Once T-Mo (or AT&T) comes out with this, my next thought is how easy will it be for those of us to get the upgrade that have T-Mobile or AT&T Phone Editions in Canada that don't have T-Mo or AT&T contracts? Hopefully T-Mobile will allow us to buy the upgrade without proving we have a contract with them.

I think you have brought upa very important point. I'm willing to bet that you are going to have to have an account to get the upgrade. It's been my experience that T-Mobile have very big blinders, and ear plugs if you don't have an account, but very helpful if you do. I guess we will have to wait and see. If I here anything either way I'll post it.

....yeah I use Paragon Again at Pocket PC Passion I was just joking. :)

I would have hoped that all that is needed to get the upgrade would be a valid credit card. (Of course, this even of itself is sometimes a problem with the US as they often will not ship to Canada if the payment is by credit card with a non-US address.)

One of the problems, Dov, is that most of their departments can't ship outside the US. Even with a T-Mobile account in order for me to get a replacement device it has to be sent to a USA address. Secondly, an update would included their radio stack which I doubt they want just anyone to have. On their last update you had to have a T-Mobile phone number to download the update....there was a link floating around where you could get it but it wasn't an publicized one.

Having said all that they may not make an issue of it. I'll do some digging around the first of next week and see what I can find out. I'm sure there are a lot of Canadians, and others who are curious to know.

hopefully T-Mobile will announce new hardware to go along with the 2003 edition too... Want a better XDA - :mecry:

I was at a T-Mobile store a few weeks ago, and the manager hinted that a new version of the XDA would be available in September. :D

I love my XDa (only major complaint can't get wifi), but i could always use some better performance and such. So make my video play better. Less crashes and less missed calls. Sign me up. hehe.

Hi,
What causes the missed calls? I'm thinking about getting an XDA and applying the future software upgrade to windows mobile phone edition 2003, but I'd rather wait until the new XDA with 2003 comes out if the present one misses calls!

Thanks.

Hi Bob...(boy that statement brings back memories...)

I am willing to bet that the "newer" XDA that store manager hinted about is the one with 64 meg ram - and that being the only thing "upgraded" about the hardware. What I am looking for in a PPCPE (ok Mobile 2003) hardware device is GSM/GPRS, onboard bluetooth, 64k screen, 32/64 memory, x-scale processor and a SDIO slot. Not too much to ask now-a-days as that seems to be the "standard" configuration of the majority of newer PPC hardware devices... Why can't HTC provide that in their "upgraded" model of the XDA?

I'd still be interested to hear exactly what they mean by upgraded (hardware-wise)

I wonder....maybe HTC can't come out with any new devices on their own??? They have signed a deal with HP to produce some sort of converged device. It wouldn't be to big of a surprise to find that they can't produce a competing brand of their own under the terms of the contract. HTC basicly marketed the XDA when they failed to sign a deal with HP/Compaq. Now that has changed they don't need (and maybe can't) any longer.

Perhaps the new device from T-Mobile will be HPs or possibly the GSM version of the Samsung i700.

Just a thought to chew on.

I want all of the same things that you listed. I hate not being able to use my Jabra Bluetooth Headset without buying a bulky and expensive adapter for my XDA. And while the screen on the current XDA is good, a 64k transreflective screen would be much nicer (although it would negatively impact battery life).

While I would welcome 64MB of RAM, I hope that is not the only improvement in the next generation of this device. HTC clearly is very capable engineering these devices, so I would be very surprised, and disappointed, if the only improvement offered iin the next gen is a bump up in RAM.

I loved my XDA, and enjoyed it for a full five months before having it slip out of my pocket while rushing to get off a plane at O'Hare on January 2nd. Given its price, I reached the agonizing conclusion that I would not replace it until it had the features you described in your post. And I may not buy another PPC (XDA or otherwise) until Microsoft improves ActiveSync and gives us the ability to run IE in landscape mode without a soft reset. My e740 is no XDA, but it looks like that my be my only PPC for a very long time.
