Any news on if or when HP will release a ROM update for purchase or otherwise that we can use to update to the new operating system.

You'll eventually be able to check this URL:

http://www.hp.com/sbso/special/ppc_upgrade.html

for information on upgrading your device. It looks as though 5400, 3900 and 3800 PPC's will have an upgrade path. The move for the 3800 surprises me, though, as it doesn't have an XScale processor...

The link doesn't work yet; but I am expecting that it will have information available by the end of the week, though I'm guessing really...

Hope this helps!

Check the story about upgrades at pocketnow (http://pocketnow.com/index.php?a=portal_detail&t=news&id=1695). (Check the home page, too, for a whole bunch of new Pocket PC stuff. :-))

Looks like they just updated the site. The free upgrade should be on the HP site on the 26th of June.

Yes, they did, but they only list information about the 3900s and 5400s. There's no information about the 3800s. :-(

It also says if you bought between certain dates to get a free upgrade, you'll have to get it from MS. Am I reading that right? 8O

I have a 3955 does anyone know if we'll see the speed increases with the upgrade? I've seen the benchmarks on the 2215 and they look impressive. I wonder if it's due to the slightly different X-Scale or the new .net based Pocket PC 2003...

Anyone know?

As a owner of a two week old 5450 that was bought solely for the 2003 upgrade(i had a 3970 i gave to girlfriend, and wanted built in wifi) i now seem to be in a pickle. Has anyone managed to get a response on the upgrade from HP in the UK??? there is nothing on the website, and from what i hear may be quite separate from HP in US. What happened last time(2000 -> 2002?) did the Us branch cater for UK, and if so does that mean its going to be WEEKS untill i can get my hands on the upgrade?

...and if so does that mean its going to be WEEKS untill i can get my hands on the upgrade?

It could be longer than that... The PPC 2002 upgrade was delayed on 2 different occasions, for a total of over 3 months worth of waiting time. I ordered mine early, and still didn't get it until January or February of 2001...I think. The timing could be off... It was originally scheduled to be released in October of 2000 as I recall.

Bottom line, we'll know more on June 26th. I do hope that they offer the upgrade for purchase via download. It would make life so much easier. I can burn my own CD thank you!

MONTHS!!!! looks like my 5450 might be going EBays way and i'll get a 5550 in the states on my hols :D . It is really annoying that there are people posting/reviewing the update on 5450 when for all us owners its going to be ages, even thought from the sounds of the previews they have final code. I shouldn't have invested so much in jackets etc(gps, pc card and CF+) then i could just buy a 2120(or whatever it's going to be in Uk, 2100?)

I didn't say it WOULD be; just that it COULD be.

We're going to have to wait until 26-June-03 before we know what the time frames are.

I'm in the same boat with my 5455 and 3955...

Well just got off phone to HP in UK. What a waste of time!!!! I'm not convinced they have ever heard of wm2003, let alone know they should offer an upgrade. I was wondering if I called HP in US if i might have any luck. Any one else tried it yet? The guy in UK recons within a month(or two...three.,....who knows?)

You're off by a year. Pocket PC 2002 certainly wasn't scheduled for release in October 2000. :-) It was announced in September 2001 and scheduled to be available in October 2001.

Personally I think everyone should relax a little bit. They said They would post an announcement on the 26th. Well, that is only 24 hours away. Is it that difficult to wait a day and see what they have to say?

You're prolly right. I thought my timing was off... My point however, was that the PPC 2002 upgrade was delayed on 2 different occasions and then took a long while to deliver once the CD was finally released.

Personally, if we see this thing before Thanksgiving, I for one will really be amazed.

I also do hope that HP goes with a download delivery method instead of insisting on shipping a CD. I can burn my own if I want, and HP can certainly create an ISO image that I can download...

Thanks for the correction, Steve!

Now the links are there. But half way through the coupon process I got stuck on a pager error about "Customer type" :(
Guess I'll go with snail mail.

Here is some additional info, which was pulled form the HP, and was pulled from another site. Thus take it with a grain of salt, as I have not bothered to verity the information, seem very plausible...

Take a LONG vacation... here is what I found on another BBS (quoted verbatim):

Status of 2003 Upgrade

Just got off the phone with Scott at Qmedia (the folks that will be distrubuting the upgrades). Apparently HP has not submitted the list of serial numbers to Qmedia (this won't happen until July 6th). Also HP has just re-submitted their tweaks to PocketPC 2003 back to Microsoft and that process (Microsoft testing and certifying their tweaks) will not be complete for several weeks. Qmedia is hoping to start shipping out the upgrades probably sometime around July 26th or so.

This is why you can't go through the online process to get the upgrade.
