Now that PPC2003 has been released does anyone have any idea as to when we will be able to get a PPC2003 upgrade?

Will it be free?
Or will we be ripped by Compaq/Hp/Microsoft & have to pay?

My wife hates me being a bleeding edge technologist cause it costs her to much money....

Now that we have kids i have to pull my head in

These are all guesses / rumours:

When? The 5550 doesn't seem to be available just yet, but shouldn't be long. The upgrade for the 5450 will probably be a month or two later to tempt the impatient PDA-junkies like me to buy the new hardware anyway. Can anyone remember the delay for the Pocket PC 2002 upgrade? I didn't have an iPAQ back then.

How much? Inge's PDA (http://www.inges-pda.net/blogg.html) seems to be a good source for info and he says that anyone buying after 2 months before the release date will get it free, otherwise it'll be a small charge.

I'm sure HP will announce somethng fairly soon.

HP in Australia give nothing away..... we poor suckers who bought a 5450 last month will no doubt be made to pay that is unless the ROM is posted on the US web site.....chances of that happening.......0 :(

I purchased the upgrade eariler today direct from HP by calling the 800 number list on HP's site. The cost was $29.95, also I opted for overnight shipment. The sales rep told me it would go out today and I should have it tomorrow. With some of the reports I have read on the net today, I don't think I will be receiving this upgrade tomorrow. But I can still hope, right?

PS I just check my bank account to see if I was charged and I was not. Or atleast I don't see it yet/

I spoke to HP in Aus today and they informed me that i will be able to order it from their web site tomorrow. $59.95. No free upgrade even though i purchase the unit less than 2 weeks ago!

I think I'll wait untill I see the horror stories (or lack of) from folks who install the upgrade before trying it myself

I'm with Lasher, I have an Axim not an Ipaq but it never hurts to wait and see before spending the money :)

And files on Kazaa are SO reliable and always exactly what they are labled as and have NO chance of frying your PPC....

no chance whatsoever

Seems a bit steep to me too.

Especially since in the US it will be free to people who purchased one recently.

madbart
06-25-2003, 07:25 AM
They have heard of it here. I called them yesterday and HP said it would be available to purchase online as of Thursday (Melbourne).
Not happy about paying though seeing i only purchased ny 5450 10 days ago. No free upgrade here!

Jerry Raia
06-25-2003, 07:27 AM

madbart

Hopefully someone how is connected with kazaa will be kind enough to put it in an accessible directory :D

I did the upgrade to PPC2002 on my old unit via software from kazaa. Worked fine as Compaq were shipping 6 weeks from order and i was not prepared to wait.

Jerry Raia
06-25-2003, 07:58 AM
Still you must admit, it is a bit risky

madbart

I am to impatient to wait and will take the risk! Hope i don't get burnt!

As expected HP in UK dont seem to have a clue what i was on about...so I can probably expect it to show up on the website on Thurs :) The guy on the phone seemed to think somewhere in the region of a month, but if other regions ship tomorrow what would the problem be??? I might try to call USA and order from there...Anyone else tried this? And if anyone does get the upgrade PLEASE drop me a copy!

We'll see if HP comes through on the 26th.

It should be illegal for them to sell me a product and then try & charge me to update the software 10 days later! 8O . It would only be my impatience that does it just so i can update in a more timley manner. That is not to say that i will not purchase a license when it becomes available to me. :D [/quote]

I'm still not convinced that your not eligible for the free upgrade, if you only purchased your device 10 days ago. But, what about where you purchased the product? What is there return policy? Is it possible for you to return the iPaq to the store where you purchased it from and the just purchased a new until with 2003 on it?

I agree. Check back with the store where you purchased the device. If you can't get an acceptable answer from HP, I would try to return the device...

In Aus there is no return policy on Ipaqs or insurance like you guys have in the states.
I bought it from my own business and being a HP business partner give us no advantage with HP......Not happy

I just got my 5455 a couple weeks ago and should be eligible for the free upgrade (according to the HP site from MS). I would still pay the $30 to get it quicker. However, I will probably wait and see how many horror stories there are first.

Just got the news i didn't want fro HP in UK

These upgrades usually start when the new products that already have the latest operating system are released and have been available in the UK. The new iPAQ's that have PPC 2003 already installed won't be available in the UK untill end of July, start of August so it will also be around that time that the upgrade offer will also be launched. At this moment in time we do not have a definite date but just keep checking our web site for details.

Oh well...lets hope HP US come through, or the UK branch is wrong :)

Well no news from them yet.

Ok, i'm not greatwith timezones, but its 8pm GMT here, and I'm guessing after noon west coast, so surely by now HP should have given some new info? They are letting Dell beat them to it...come on HP show us your customer support is better by shipping today(i wish:))

Jerry Raia

Shipping today?? We'll be lucky if it shows up on the web page today!
Nice thought though. :)

5450 Part No. - 336754-B21
3970 Part No. - 339983-B21
3950 Part No. - 336759-B21

These upgrades will not be ready for shipping until the end of July. So that means there is a 5 week wait.
h3850 and h3870 will have to wait until October for their release. :( :(

ok i'll stop in the forums, on here at least. So is the paid for upgrade out yet? I thought HP Singapore were shipping... Anyway, everyone who wants it is going to get it anyway, thats just how it goes. I've already ordered my upgrade for my 3970, and i qualify for free upgrade as soon as it ships, so dont slag me off for not paying. I just would like to try out a new version, and hate waiting for companies to ship stuff thats very likely to be siting in their warehouse.

Thanks for adding that...

Regardless of how you try to justify it, what you are doing is still illegal...
