I really tried, but I wasn't able to completely my iPAQ 2215 review for tonight. I've had a heck of a weekend, including getting only two hours of sleep last night because our 12-week old puppy has kennel cough, and trying to coordinate all this Windows Mobile 2003 news hasn't left me with enough time to get the review finished. Oh yeah, and I got a huge blister on my finger from playing bass a little too energetically at church this morning before hanging from a ladder for 30 minutes filming a baptism service. What a day! 8O

I'll give you two things to take the edge off your appetite though. The first is this picture:

Yes, that's right, the iPAQ 2215 works with the new Stowaway XT keyboard! That makes it the lightest and smallest mobile office yet.

The second bit of info relates to the performance of the iPAQ 2215 (higher numbers are better):

The above shows how much faster the iPAQ 2215 is, with the combination of Windows Mobile 2003 and the PXA255 XScale processor, than previous iPAQs. Don't let anyone tell you that Windows Mobile 2003 is "just a bug fix" - this new OS is tuned for blazing performance! Stay tuned for the full review tomorrow.

People with 2215's are reporting that it's finally possible to play SNES games at a full speed with sound, so it's confirmed. The 2200 series FLYS!

Sweetness! I thought we weren't going to see a performance increase or XScale optimization until the 2004(5?) version of Pocket PC.

I have my hands on a 2215, and let me say it's unbelievably fast.... we are talking speed demon!!! Pocket Bible opens crazy fast even between books, and even large chapters almost never see a spinning beach ball....IE renders so incredibly fast i thought stuff was in cache... cleared it and let me say IE alone is worth the price of admission!!! :D

I'd just like to add that all the butt kicking consumers rightly gave MS and Intel over the whole XScale fiasco has obviously produced results!

Yes I can confirm 24 FPS with sound on many games, 14.7 FPS on Pocket Quake!!! With some tweaks i think Pocket SNES can be even faster too!!

It's getting tougher and tougher to decide: New p.c. or IPAQ 5550! I can only imaging the speed difference between my 3870 and a new 5550. Currently, it takes 1 minute, to start TransACT! 2.0 and open my database. I have three questions:

1) Performance marks for the 2215 and 5550 should be about equal?

2) If data throughput is about 5x faster, looks like my TransACT! app will open and run in about 12 seconds vs 1-minute on my 3870?

3) Is PPC 2003 a free download? Or am I just thinking funny thoughts from sleep deprivation?

1) Performance marks for the 2215 and 5550 should be about equal?

They should likely be similar as they utilize similar components as well as the PXA255 and PPC 2003. The 5550 has more internal memory, so this assumes the same program memory is allocated.

2) If data throughput is about 5x faster, looks like my TransACT! app will open and run in about 12 seconds vs 1-minute on my 3870?

More or less. It could be doing more or less that Pocket Word requires (which was the test Jason quotes).

3) Is PPC 2003 a free download? Or am I just thinking funny thoughts from sleep deprivation?

Maybe. HP hasn't released an upgrade path. ViewSonic has stated that if you purchased a device in the last 30 days the upgrade is free...after that there is a minimal charge.

Where did you hear that? In the past, Compaq (so likely now HP) based the price on when you purchased your device...just like ViewSonic is planning to do.

ricksfiona
06-23-2003, 07:24 AM
That's cool. If it's a minimal charge (~$20) or so, I can live with that... A minor speed increase, better stability, ability to use Bluetooth and TransACT! at the same time would be very nice.

Two questions:

1) Should we expect similar results on similar systems by other manufacturers? i.e. Dell Axim 400/255.

2) Has ANYONE heard anything solid from Dell about their plans to release this?

They might do so for people who have purchased an iPAQ or Viewsonic in the last few weeks - but up to my knowledge HP did not market their iPAQ's with a free PPC2003 upgrade lately.

2) Has ANYONE heard anything solid from Dell about their plans to release this?

One of Dell's support staff (Rollie) stated on the Dell community support board that he has a Pocket PC 2003 Axim, and it sounds like it is still the X5. This doesn't mean an update will be available, but it would be possible. Chances are Dell will make a statement later in the day.

For the ViewSonic, it is in the last 30 days or next 90 days. The iPAQ 3600 series had a large window (I think) for PPC 2002. HP hasn't made a statement about an upgrade, though if they do release one, it is likely not everyone would have to purchase it...so for some it would be free.

Hopefully HP will - I am still waiting for some news if there will be an upgrade for the iPAQ 38xx series.

Seems that somebody managed to copy or mod a PPC 2003 ROM onto a 38xx. There is a heated/flaming discussion going on brighthand (http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=f4b1a71e862d4f7986d3746b31eda70c&threadid=80764) whether it is for real.

Hurray to Microsoft for their performance enhancements, hurray to HP for putting together such a fast device, and hurray to SPB for finally creating a form of benchmarks that we can use to compare devices quantitatively! I can't wait to see what other benchmark data Jason has cooked up using this program

I expect there will be no problems. It is based on the .Net Compact framework, which ships with the OS and which should also get some performance enhancements due to its OS enhancements. :)
