I did the update and it went smoothly - the download took perhaps 30 seconds, and the install took a few minutes. Unfortunately, it demands a reboot - wasn't there some initiative inside Microsoft to cut down on the number of reboots that software requires? I'm in the midst of burning a DVD with my Windows Media Center Edition 2005 machine, so I can't reboot just yet. Anyone else gotten further than me care to report in on what's new in this version? I couldn't see any notes about updates during the process.

The update didn't reboot either one of my systems. It all depends if something Zune updates is open at the time of install.

The only obvious fix so far is that it doesn't corrupt playback with some of my MPEG-4 .MOV files... so it transcodes cleanly to the Zune now. The rest is subtle so far (a few UI render fixes, for example)... but I haven't beat on it hard.

Mine required a reboot as well.

Haven't really seen any noticeable changes. On zune.net, it now lists the English version of Vista, along with XP SP2 and Media Center.

Yeah, I guess it makes sense that the primary reason for this release was to make it Vista compatible. Hopefully future versions will have more substantial updates...

Both my firmware and software updates went well.

One thing fixed (that I reported to MS several weeks ago) was that the selected sort order was not retained when you returned to a listing. For example, if you listed all the albums by David Byrne sorted they by year and click on an album to see details then returned to the album list it would no longer be sorted by year. It was pain, and that appears to be fixed.

My Zune Software wouldn't find a new update. Checking for new updates failed to find something. So I started to download ALL the updates from Microsoft Update (yes optional, hardware, IE7, whatever!). I don't think it had something to do with that, maybe it was just a temporal problem of Zune system.

In any case after this I checked again for updates and I downloaded it. At some point it started downloading a new firmware update! But I had already v1.2 on my player. I don't know what happened, in any case it did no firmware updates.

Oh, and no system reboot required!

You are going to have to get off the RC release before it expires anyway.
