View Full Version : Suprised at the difference between PXA250 and PXA255 Processors

I finally recevied my free ViewSonic V37 (from the MS offer). I currently use HP 5450. I must say that the first thing I notice from the V37 was how much better / smoother / faster the PXA255 runs than the PXA250. Now I'm not doing any type of office benchmarking or anything, but from my own observations, the V37 seems to run circles around my 5450. I know everyone's been talking about the differences in the chips, I was just suprised at how much difference the new chip actually makes.

:) Hey, yours' a clear statement and because of it I'm on for an iPaq 2215, speed only matters when the user gets on his/her eye the difference, thanks for saying.

It might not be just the CPU. I had a bash with an XDA a couple of weeks ago and found that the dfference between that and my 3970 was considerable.

I have also heard others saying that the speed of the iPAQs was sub stellar.

It could also depend on how many programs and data you have loaded - more is generally slower in my experience. :?

I dont think the difference will be that profound unless the device has the new bus speed...

Just to clarify, I hard reset my 5450, and compared both from a "fresh" os standpoint, and then I also loaded my standard apps to both (which isn't much) and compared, and the V37 ran considerably quicker and smoother.

aroma, there are still variables -- such as the HP ROM-included software that's run on Startup -- that make it difficult to conclude the difference. That said, in general the PXA255 should provide a small but noticeable speed boost on 100MHz buses.

I got my Axim X5 400 in December, and a friend of mine got his in early June. His, with the PXA 255, was faster than mine (with the 250)...even in 200 Mhz mode!

Yes, the PPC 2002 devices with PXA255s are marginally faster. But for the V37 and iPaq 2215, the main reason is Pocket PC 2003. People over at Brighthand are reporting 14.7 FPS in Pocket Quake, and full speed Chrono Trigger with sound in Pocket SNES! :rock on dude!:

What were they getting on PPC2002?

Hehehe  on PPC2002 the game Chrono Trigger wasnt even playable haha....and even if you managed to get a frame rate of say about... 10 fps, using some overclocked device...this was still WITHOUT sound.

Oh and the 14.7 fps in PocketQuake is what overclocked devices were getting. or around there.
