Hi All,
I have IPAQ 3970 and AIPTEK bluetooth dongle (WIDCOMM 1.3.2.7). I can setup activesync over bluetooth, but its really slow. What I really want is LAN access
From my Desktop bluetooth configuration, I can't setup LAN access as the IPAQ is reported as only having file transfer, object exchange and serial access.
Iam pretty sure that both the dongle and IPAQ support LAN access. What Iam I doing wrong. Ive read the guides but it seems that Iam just unable to setup a LAN access connection. Help please!
Can bluetooth really be this difficult?

Have a look in our Bluetooth Guides (http://www.geekzone.co.nz/content.asp?contentid=449) on how to do this.
What the desktop is reporting are the Services offered by the iPAQ. The LAN Access is not a Service, but a Client...
You're in the right track, just a little bit more

Hi,
Thanks for the information. I tried the Bluetooth guides before posting but still no luck. However, armed with the fact that my setup seems to work (i.e. I do have LAN access) I'll try again.
One other question, how can I get the IP address of the Pocket PC when using Bluetooth LAN (or Iam I missing the point here). I want to connect Pocket Controller over the Bluetooth LAN access by TCPIP not through activesync as its so slow. For this Pocket Controller needs the target IP Address.
Any light shedding would be most appreciated.

One of the guides is a list of things to check when BT LAN Access does not work. The first thing to check is a personal firewall. Most of the people found Zone Alamr is a problem.
Second, download VxUtil and you'll have everything IP from there: address, ping, whois, trace, etc...

I haven't played with BT networking yet but you may want to try Pocket Hosts (http://zimac.de/cestuff.htm).

Hi,
Well thanks for all the advice so far, the VxUtil is a gem. However, I still haven't got a working bluetooth LAN.
I can start a Bluetooth LAN connection, the IPAQ says its connected. My Bluetooth places shows it as connected. Ive set the Bluetooth desktop IP address to 192.168.01, Ive enabled internet connection sharing, the firewall is off. Ive checked through everything in the guides but I still can't ping either way. The gateway address is configured the same for both devices. There's no other device using 192.168.0.1. Ive tried running welcome.exe
One question is what should the DNS entry on the Desktop for the bluetooth adaptor be set to? The same DNS as I get for my desktop LAN connection?
Iam on my last bluetooth breath, any other items Iam missing?

DNS entry can be your DNS entry for the other adapter. No need for gateway definition.
Are you sure your firewall is off? What product is it?

If you haven't already done so, you may want to try setting the WINS address on the Pocket PC to the IP of your desktop.
Like I said before, I haven't played with BT but here's what I did to get everything to play together nicely with Wi-Fi:
- Set the desktop to a STATIC IP address. Do not use DHCP on the desktop as this process will not work. (At least it won't with Wi-Fi.)
- Temporarily disable any firewall(s) running on the desktop.
- Set the primary WINS address of the NIC (connection?) you want to use to connect to the Internet thru the desktop with, to that of the desktop.
You may also want to check to make sure that you have the correct DNS info as supplied by your ISP in the correct place for the BT connection, if applicable.

This works, at least with wifi. I haven't messed around with BT yet, but this is the only way that I could sync my iPAQ with my laptop over wifi, by setting the IP of the laptop to the Primary WINS server on the PPC.
