Is there anyway that we can install applications/games directly by copying the *.exe installer file into a SD card, and run the installer from there ? Just to avoid this non-stable application called 'active-sync' ? Thanks.

Ok. I helped a friend with her brand new axim. Bad news is, it cannot connect to the desktop. And I followed the steps that I used when I was prepping my own axim. (charge for 4 hours, install activesync on desktop, see the 'get connected' screen, turn on axim, place axim on cradle, connect cradle to usb, etc. etc.)
Activesync installation halted at the 'get connected'. seems like the axim is not recognized by activesync. Your device was not detected. USB is available. If the connection you are using is available, make sure the cable is plugged in securely. installing activesync 3.5 directly from dell's CD.
It seems like the problem mentioned on this place (http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;q264693), the suggested resolution mentioned:
In the Device Manager window, expand Other Devices, and then double-click USB Device. Under Device status, you see the error, "Code 28." Click Remove.
I am at the office right now, using win2000. This might be silly, but there is no Other Devices in the device manager window. duh. The one I see is Universal Serial Bus Controller. Is that the one ? I dont see anything mentioning Code 28 on it.

Problem solved. I use my cradle, and everything works fine. Returning her cradle to dell singapore it is.
p.s. It is kinda funny looking at this thread. I was talking to myself. Uh well. I was kinda panicked earlier. The owner of the axim is my supervisor, and I was the person who recommended the axim to her. Well anyway, problem solved.

EXEs generally have to be installed from the desktop. If you are offered a .CAB installer, that can be copied to the PPC and installed by double-clicking, or using the most excellent CABINSTL utility (do a board search, you'll find a link).
I prefer the desktop installer, as you can uninstall from the PPC, then reinstall simply by checking the box in AS Programs dialog. It's a nice system, it's rarely failed for me.

I guess activesync is somehow related to the user's karma.
Mine works 100% of the time. My supervisor's AS works like 33% only. Her karma must be really bad. :D

"Users will be users." CAn't remember where i read that, but it goes way back. Your supe may be one of these people who dicker with their computer, or just fudge with it, and normally reliable software collapses into a mess of lost data, broken functions and system instability.
I've been lucky (?) with AS myself, but when I uninstalled and reinstalled, instead of it respecting my existing data at work, it wiped out all previous appointments from the desktop. Ouch. Some programmer at MS was smoking crack when he set up that contingency. (No offense intended to people who smoke crack.)

Talk about the devil. My supervisor just called from home. She mentioned that her axim goes dead right after she puts it in the cradle. I dont know what that means, but right now is sunday, and I am not going to go to her house just to fix it. :devilboy:
