View Full Version : New Server, Here We Come!

Frequent Pocket PC Thoughts visitors will know that sometimes, our site just isn't on the grid. We have anywhere from one to six service restarts a day due to high load. The simple fact is that our current hardware (Celeron 1.3 Ghz, 1 GB RAM, 40 GB EIDE HD) is overloaded. We've implemented all sorts of tweaks, including database caching systems that we've built from scratch, but the end result is the same: we don't have the raw power we need to achieve stability.

We've needed to do this for a long time, and it's finally happening: we're moving to a new server at Rackshack, a monster Dell box with 2 GB of RAM, twin 73 GB SCSI hard drives in a RAID array, and dual 2 Ghz Xeon processors. Yeah baby, yeah! :rock on dude!: I've been playing around with a copy of this site on the new server, and the speed is blazing fast, but I'm most excited about simply having stable uptime. :-)

We're making the move tonight, so depending on how fast the DNS records update, it may take a couple of days for everything to move over properly. Once we start to make the move, the forums will be locked down so the databases can be moved over.

Thanks for your patience! Things may be a bit bumpy on the site over the next 12 hours or so, but please don't email me about problems until after that time - I assure you, we'll already know about them.

Wow 8O

I just can't beleive that the old server supported this site at all.

Viva PPCTs!

It just barely did...this new one should handle it much, much better. :D

This is kind of nice, I have the whole site to myself. ;-)

Gosh Jason... with a server like this you could probably host another big site on the same box without any trouble. 8)

Will this help accelerate forums accessible in a mobile format? At least the new PIE in 2003 will format the pages better and make it more readable....

I can't believe you guys were running on that Celeron box! My hat's off to your technical team.

pdaPhoneHome.com just recently moved to a new dedicated server with a 2.1GB AMD processor, 1G RAM, and 60G disk. It is amazing how these moves can happen in mid-flight with minimal outages.

It still boggles my mind that you were running on that server.

Heck, I remember when Pocket PC Thoughts was this small blog started by Jason on a whim, on a shared server. Now it's grown to be a monster!

Congrats Jason - the web site has come a long ways since you first started it, as has the Pocket PC world :)

Absolutely! Jorj Bauer, Chris Edwards, Janak Parekh, and of course Fabrizio Fiandanese, all make up our awesome technical team that hand-crafted the OS and services on this new server. I couldn't have done this without them! :werenotworthy:

Man but the new server must cost a pretty penny per month...

Anyways apparently I caught the site in mid change last night, saw this announcement, then went to page 2 for any missed articles, then when I went back on the browser the haiku loaded instead. Then I went to page 2 again and clicked on the previous page link, and the front page loaded fine again. Then I went to this forum thread and had started to type something, but by coincidence my cordless keyboard ran out of juice and I had to change batts, and by then everything was gone. So that's my story and I'm sticking to it, hee hee.

I agree. I'm surprised the site was running on a 1.3GHz Celeron machine. I know this is a very busy site and you folks have done a TRABAJO MOY EXCELLENTE!

Keep up the good work. I would like to mention that I would be happy to pay $5 - $10 a month to keep this site running. Or maybe for that money, to get some kind of 'Premium' service that may include 'Subscriber Only' offers. You have lots of options.

BTW, I pay $5/month for web access and headlines for the Wall Street Journal. So you now know where I place you folks in my priorities.

Yup. Thursday October 12th, 2000, was the very first post. That would have been a little creepy if it was Friday the 13th and my name was Jason....well, my name is Jason, but you know what I mean.

Ah, the memories. And it's funny to see how my concept of what I wanted in a site have changed. Thanks for the blast from the past!
