I have a linksys wire router connected to my 2 desktops. If i wanted to add a wireless access point can i just get the access point and connect it to the linksys, or do i have to get a new wireless router?

I cannot answer your question directly, but maybe my own experience will assist you.
I have a wired network using a Linksys router that connects three desktops. I wanted to add a wireless router so that I could use my laptop and Ipaq.
All I did is replace the wired router, with the wireless router and it works fine.
A couple of changes on my firewall and everything works as it should.

Yes, all you need to do is add the WAP to place you into your network. Specify the IP address of your router as the Gateway for the Internet and your set to go.

I have found the an Access Point vs a full wireless router are within $20-30 CDN of each other. I have been looking at a couple of refurbed wired/wireless routers, but I figure the end result for me will be a wireless router running off my existing wired router.
Besides, if I can get a print server built-in to the wireless one, I can run my ink-jet and my laser (laser is on the wired router now) on print queues and not have to have a machine on to slave them from.

good luck!

ummm......you can plug the WAN port of any wireless router or WAP into one of the ports of most any wired router and do exactly want you want. It does give you another layer of security for your wireless access devices, but really......if you're going to buy the WAP anyways, just make the jump clean and go WAN and transfer everything to it.

You can pick up a NetGear 814 router for as little as 30 bucks someplaces with a rebate which has 4 wired ports and a 500ft range, so the plunge is almost painless. Unless you must simply have 802.11g's speed, it's the way to go.
