Does anyone know if the new Pocket PC 2003 OS will work on the IPAQ 3635?

I think the real question should be something on the order of "Will it (PPC2003) be available for the iPaq 36xx series?"

Reality is that the hardware probably could support the PPC 2003, so long as the ROM requirement didn't exceed the capacity provided in those devices. HP has been rumored to say that the new O/S will be available for 39xx and 54xx users (probably at some sort of upgrade cost) but nothing has been said about the 36xx and 37xx devices upgradeability.

For the small amount of $$'s manufacturers will be able to charge for an upgrade, they can't invest support staff creating the driver files and ROM update programs for older devices. Having said that, if HP was to make an upgrade available for the older iPaq's, let me tell you, it would do wonders to their image as a company that stands behind their products. Let's hope they do something for the older device owners, to encourage loyalty...l

Well the 3600 iPAQs only had 16 megs of ROM, so I would say the answer is unfortunately pretty clear. Not even all of 2k2 could fit into the 3600's ROM...

They why did they sell us on the concept of being able to upgrade the operating system. We paid for flash ROM when we bought these suckers.

Apart from what Kati says, at what point does one stop offering upgrades? 2 years? 5 years? 10 years? There is a large cost to supporting old devices. I'd say that, for most that I've seen across various platforms, flash-enabled devices enable you to do at most one major OS upgrade, and that's it. This doesn't make flash any less useful: it's also used for minor service packs and other releases.

If there are literally a million of these units out there, how much profit is necessary for a programmer to do the work. Even a 100,000 sales with a $1 profit after all costs, should be worth the effort.

Unless the programmer could earn $200,000 profit doing something else...

You're not thinking of the total costs in the equation. First off, the cost may be much bigger than you think, due to design, implementation, testing, packaging, etc. Second, don't forget about technical support. Just because a upgrade is "sold" doesn't mean there are any costs after that. And Kati's point also has merit...

If the real Compaq were still around, I think we would be seeing upgrades for the 37xx, 38xx. They had 32MB ROMs and could take an abbreviated version of the PPC2k3 update like was done with the release of PPC2k

With HP releasing a slew of new Pocket PCs... chances are slim.

Very slim indeed.

Well, 38xx users can upgrade. HP will be releasing upgrades for 38xx, 39xx, and 54xx iPAQs.

Course......if you wanted it that badly, just use the .NET developers kit and write it all yourself.

Where do you see that? All I can see mentioned on the upgrade list is the 39XX and 5XXX devices.
