I was wondering if there's a utility to actively monitor a wifi signal strength preferabley in the toolbar (top or bottom) similar to to OS X airport signal icon on macs.

iirc, no (at least in the native drivers). However, their control panel applet has a much better signal meter than some cards so they may have opted to go that way instead.

My Compaq WL110 driver puts a signal meter on the today screen taskbar at the bottom right.
Cellular Phone and Network Connection Monitor 2.0 (http://www.pdawin.com/InternetMonitor.html) $9.95
IP Dashboard (http://www.hudsonmobile.com/products.html) $11.99
I'm using IP Dashboard and really like it. They don't do what you are asking for (signal strength), but you may wish to try the demos to monitor your bandwidth usage and see what transfer speeds you are achieving.

Which cards have such a utility? I've actually been thinking of getting a new card because thie D-Link card blocks my headphone jack :|

Both my Compaq WL110 and my 3Com Airconnect have the signal meter on the bottom taskbar on the today screen. They are just bar representations of the speed actually like 1Mbps, 2Mbps, 5Mbps, 7Mbps, 11Mbps which changes based on signal strength.

Both the Symbol and Socket drivers put a signal strength icon/display in the start bar. The cards are very low profile, though not comparitively cheap.

My Symbol 'Specturm24 High Rate' card puts it down in the sys tray.

My Ambicom WL-1100c-CF does not either. It has a utility that you can run and tab through to show it but nothing as useful as on the task bar.
