I've owned three pocket pc's in the last three years, and at some point, I have had to perform a hard reset on each of them. One thing I have seen frequently, in the forums,is people talking about having to rename their device and create a new profile for "activestink".

Now don't get me wrong, there are plenty of things wrong with "activestink". If this were'nt true, we wouldn't be calling it this. But, if you perform a hard reset on your device, you need to do 2 things before docking your device again.

1) Open "activestink" on your desktop or laptop and delete the partnership of the device that you reset.
2) On your device, tap Start, Settings, tap the System tab, About, then choose the device ID tab and enter the name of choice for your baby.
I have done this 5 or 6 times and have never changed the name of my device, or had any problems with items syncing over from the sync folder.

...one more thing, before ActiveSync Restore gets its hands on your device. For those of you in who use a different set of regional settings, go to Start -> Settings -> Regional Settings to set your chosen nationality. Otherwise ActiveSync gives you your second heart stopper of the day by telling you that the Restore file might be corrupt!

ActiveSync. NOT my favourite piece of software.

Paranoiaic step: check that AS is set to sync ALL APPOINTMENTS ad ALL TASKS (not just active tasks).

My work pc's .PST file lost all past appointments (including meeting notes) and tasks when I synced my PPC after a hard reset and a reinstallation of AS. Default settings can elminate (with extreme prejudice) the old data and inactive tasks. Ouch. That's a bad feature logic, programs should never delete data without confirmation. >:(

I never had a problem. If you have a system restore program and you restore after you do the hard reset it should still recognize it as the same device.

Not if the problem is ActiveStink, and you have to uninstall/reinstall. In such circumstances, u had better have your wits about you and delete the partnership. Or it will say, "You can't use that device name, schmuck," and rename it for you. Nice, huh?

Uninstalling should remove the partnerships, but noooooo. Come back after you've had an AS disaster and you learn that "should" is not in Microsoft's vocabularly. >:)

I used to back up religiously, but I don't like the way it grays out all the check boxes in AS after restoring, so you can't remove a program from your device without uninstalling it from your desktop.
I store almost all of my programs in the built in storage in ROM and on a storage card, and after a hard reset, I have found only a couple of programs that don't run without reinstalling them.
I know everybody's likes and needs are different but this works for me.
My most important items that I would worry about backing up, are backed up on my desktop and CD anyway. Such as, listpro lists, ewallet, Money, and all outlook items.
