I HAVE A VIEWSONIC V35 AND A PC WITH WIN 98.
I HAVE UPGRADED FROM ACTIVESYNC 3.5 TO 3.6 TO 3.7.
THE USB CONECTION AND THE SYNC BUTTON WORK FINE, BUT IF I TRY THE EXPLORE BUTTON , I RECEIVE THE NEXT MESSAGES :
IN ACTIVESYNC 3.5 AND 3.6 :
“FAILED TO START REMOTE SERVICES – CRITICAL COMUNICATIONS SERVICES HAVE FAILED TO START. TO CORRECT THIS ERROR, EXIT ALL APPLICATIONS AND RESTART WINDOWS. IF THE PROBLEM PERSISTS, PLEASE REINSTALL MICROSFT ACTIVESYNC BY RUNNING SETUP FROM THE INSTALLATION DISK (S).”
IN ACTIVESYNC 3.7
“FAILED TO START REMOTE SERVICES – CRITICAL COMUNICATIONS SERVICES HAVE FAILED TO START. TRY RESETTING THE MOBIL DEVICE, AND THEN CONECT AGAIN.”
I HAVE UNINSTALLED, REINSTALLED, MADE SOFT RESETTINGS.
WHAT ELSE CAN I DO TO USE THE FILE EXPLORER ?

It will have no effect on your problem, but if you click your CAPS LOCK key it will make your posts easier to read. ;)
1. You might search your PC for WCESMGR.LOG and WCESCOMM.LOG for indications of a logged error message when you try to explore. You could search the Microsoft KB for articles on the specific error message you find.
2. You should have a "Mobile Device" icon on your desktop. Do you? Do you get the same results when you click it?

2. You should have a "Mobile Device" icon on your desktop.
I installed ActiveSync 3.6 on a machine I got in March, and just installed ActiveSync 3.7. I have never had a "Mobile Device" icon on my desktop. I have an ActiveSync icon and a synchronized files folder there, but no device icon.
There is a Mobile Device icon in Windows Explorer, though.

Yeah, I have never had a mobile device icon on my screen either, at any time.

It may vary from system to system. :? If you have the icon under My Computer, or in the tree view of Explorer, it's essentially the same thing.

Well, he can try the Mobile Device in Windows Explorer or My Computer, of course. However, saying it "should" be on the desktop when it's not is misleading. Now I'm curious how you got a Mobile Device icon on your desktop. Did you copy it there, does some OEM version of ActiveSync put one there or what? What Pocket PC do you have?

I have in My Computer and in the File Explorer the Mobile Device icon, but when I click the icon I obtain the same error message. And I don’t have on my desktop a Mobile Device icon.
I checked the files WCESMGR.LOG and WCESCOMM.LOG and they don’t report any error.
Why is the error message of a communication failure and the sync works fine ?

I had no idea that I was misleading anyone. Goody-goody for you in catching me in this grave deception. :oops:
Let's see, check my driver's license. Yep, I'm me, not using an assumed identity. Check computer, yep, it's Windows 2000 Professional. Check software, yep, installed ActiveSync 3.5 from Microsoft's download site (never loaded the older version that came with my E-125). Yep, upgraded to 3.6, and 3.7. Also installed 3.5 on Windows 2000 Advanced Server at work, got the same icon.
I'm pretty sure that ActiveSync creates this desktop item. But I've only installed on Windows 2k. As I said, it may vary from operating system to operating system, I just wouldn't know.

As you can see, that's not a shortcut. So you don't have one of these? What a gyp. You should return your ActiveSync to Microsoft for a full refund. ;)

AS may be connecting to a different process on the PPC than the "file explorer." I'm stumped if you don't have any errors logged in those log files. When I launch the explore command from AS, I get the following in WCESMGR.LOG
2003-05-13 09:42:36 00000DF4 - ActiveSync second instance started, Cmd line: '/show'
2003-05-13 09:42:36 00000DF4 - ActiveSync second instance exiting
and the following in WCESCOMM.LOG
05/13/2003 09:42:40.330 - CesProxy: Accept on port 990, IsWinsock 1, hResult 0
05/13/2003 09:42:40.360 - TCP: ....S., 192.168.55.100(1033) => 192.168.55.101(990) Seq=641183903-641183903 Ack=0 Win=8192 Len=44
05/13/2003 09:42:40.410 - TCP: .A..S., 192.168.55.101(990) => 192.168.55.100(1033) Seq=1860288-1860288 Ack=641183904 Win=32768 Len=44
This would seem like simple Activesync stuff. I'm loath to suggest a full backup and hard reset, but I wonder if something on your Viewsonic isn't running correctly. Maybe another user with a Viewsonic can provide a clue. Have you posted an inquiry here (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewforum.php?f=41)?

I opened the logs you recommended and to my newbie knowledge, I don’t find and error. Except something in one of the lines that says Partner 0 . Is that ok ?

Wow, could you get any more defensive? :wink:
Anyway, you got me curious about this issue. To avoid further digressions about the icon in this thread, I've started a poll (http://www.pocketpcthoughts.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=12511) about this. Feel free to cast your "Yes" vote there. :-)

Sarcasm - it's not just for breakfast anymore. You said my post was misleading, which in my case, my perspective, my damn desktop, just wasn't true. The icon's right there <points at screen> and has been on 2 separate systems. Nyeaah!

I just determined that this icon is enabled on the desktop by TweakUI. I had done it so long ago, I had forgotten how I'd done it.
