Is there one out there. I am a poor college student who can't afford trenotes or pocket informant.

There are two freeware outliners :
ADB Idea Library (http://www.happyjackroad.com/AtomicDB/pocketpc/ideaLibrary/idea.asp) (the best one IMHO)
Infohive (http://www.owlseeker.demon.co.uk/)
You may consider Listman (http://www.transtellar.org/) too (I never understood if it was a freeware actually...)

Thanks for the links - the programs look promising, but do you know of any progrmas that are specifically designed for tasks (let you check off items, etc...). I guess these could work, but I am looking for a program that works like the task feature in pocket informant.

You get what you pay for. Come on, for what you are asking, $10 or $20 isn't that much. ListPro or PI would work, and give you lots of features too. Support the programmers!

Apparently, freeware downloaded from the site, $2.50 from handango. It appears to satisfy binstpa's requirements, too.
