Installing linux (familiar distribution or whatever) on iPAQ using USB not serial? (possible?)

hi
I just recently bought an iPAQ unfortunatly I didnt get a serial connection with it, is it possible to install linux (i.e. send keystrokes) through USB rather than serial? as that's the only cable i got and didnt get a hub...
maybe by setting up a virtual COM port? any ideas? as far as i know hyperterminal etc. (which is needed to send keystrokes to the boot prompt) only connects through COM ports (which are serial ports)
