Hard/Aluminum/Titanium Case for Toshibas (e740 mostly)

I used to have a Visor (yes, the original one, it was my last PDA, I kinda forgot about the usefulness of having them for quite a while, actually it only recently completely broke) and the screen broke 2 times from drops, and I don't wait it to happen to my brand new e740 that's going to come in a week or so. I've been searching high and low for any sort of small, hard case for a e740, but I haven't had any luck. Theres ones for palms, iPaq's, Axims, but no e740 support.

Has anyone else found one? Or will I be forced to use a wimpy leather case?

Thanks for the link, but that case is REALLY big and I want there to be openings so I can plug in headphones and whatnot into my device. I started a thread about metal cases at Brighthand.com (http://discussion.brighthand.com/showthread.php?s=&threadid=78460), maybe I'll get more responses there.

The thing is, those things aren't cases, they're just a lid that covers the face. If I drop that thing on the ground, the screen will still break! I want something that will protect the whole PDA from drops.

Why are you looking for a metal case then? I would think that the impact inside a metal case would be just as bad as dropping it on the ground. I would think a leather or similar type of case would be better at protecting the PDA. On the other hand, I think a metal case would be excellent protection against crushing the pda--if, for example, you left it in your back pocket and sat down, or had it in your book case/backpack and the pda was on the bottom when when 'setting' the bag down.

One comment though regarding the Toshiba units, I have a Maestro, and it is much more rugged than the Compaq Aero 1550 that I had years ago. I went through 3 different screens on it--the extend warrantee paid for itself several times over 8) My Maestro has been dropped much worse, and the screen has survived. About a month ago, I dropped my Maestro from about chest hight. It landed on the top edge (i.e., where it pokes out from the slip cover) and proceeded to tumble end-over-end down 3-4 steps. I took a deep breath as I turned it and to my surprise, it still worked. It makes me wonder if the 2 CompUSA warrantee was worth purchasing. :lol:

Yeah, that "crushing protection" you meant is exactly what I want. The last PDA I had (it was quite a while ago) had it's screen broken by someone sitting on it IN ITS CASE accidentally. The warranty was gone, so now I've got a broken Handspring Visor 2MB in my desk. Anyways, dropping a handheld in a metal case wouldn't be that bad, especially if it has padding on the inside. And dropping PDA's on the corner while in a leather case can be bad, I broke a Visor screen doing that one time.

Bad advice spursdude. One of those Cover-ups certainly won't protect his PDA has you'd hope:

Around New Year's my e740 display was crushed in. The fault was the Pocket Solutions' Cover-up. Instead of protecting the PDA's screen it's poor design actually crushed it. The fault was the padding that is cut to the dimensions of the display. It's a stupid design since when the Cover-Up is closed this 'padding' places the full forces of the lid against the display.... In my pocket, the Cover-Up pushed in the display and left it in that solid white phase. The Pocket-Solutions Cover-Up is a Horrendous product.

Luckily the store that the e740 came from exchanged it for a new unit. For the Cover-Up, I've since removed the screen crushing pad and applied thin sections of foam that make contact around the edges of the display and the Cover-Up lid, now leaving the screen protected as I'd expect it to be.

Unfortunately I lacked the time to complain directly to Pocket Solutions.


For a case what I'm waiting for is a form fitting wrap around design similar to the Rhinoskin aluminium HardCase that I had for my Palm V. Such a case is available for the Dells (http://www.saunders-usa.com/rhinoskin/prod.cfm?cat_id=5067&prod_id=5140) and a few others, but I'm still waiting for an e740 design.[/url]

I am looking for the same thing and am so close I can feel it, lol. Check out the case for the ipaq they have... I have emailed them about a matching case for the e740 and they said that it is in the developmental stages... I'll let you know if I hear anything, but I'm not keeping my fingers crossed. I talked to them about 4 months ago, and still nothing...

baker: I've got a couple of question about the SmartCase:
- How does your Toshiba (which do you have btw?) fit in the SmarterCase, is there much left over room?
- The case seems a little big, how is it in use?
- I can't seem to find any info on the weight, only that it contains steel plates. Is it heavy?

You can also get the same exact case from InnoPocket out of Hong Kong. The cases are shipping already. In fact, I got mine yesterday! Love it!
